Banaripara is an upazila in Barisal District in the Barisal Division of southern-central Bangladesh. The upazila is home to many distinguished personalities including A.K. Fazlul Huq (first prime minister of undivided bengal), Jyotirmoy Guha Thakurta(a member of the martyred intelligentsia of Bangladesh and former chairman of English department of Dhaka University), Shyamal Gangopadhyay(eminent writer), Mujibul Huq sardar (former cabinet secretary) and others.

It has an area of about 134.32 km2 and is surrounded by Wazirpur to the north and the east, Nesarabad to the south, Jhalokati to the east, Nazirpur to the west. The upazila is criss-crossed by many rivers. Banaripara pourashava stands on the mighty Shandhya. River erosion is a matter of great concern for this locality.

Banaripara was established as a thana in 1913 and in 1983 it was upgraded as an upazila. It consists of eight unions and one pourashava. The pourashava has an area of 4.77 km2 and is known as Banaripara sadar. Eight unions are: Syedkathi, Baisari, Iluhar, Bisharkandi, Chakhar, Bankpur, Udaikathi and Banaripara.

Population of the upazila is 143825; of which: male 51%, female 49%; Muslim 82.55%; Hindu 16.75% and others 0.7%.

There are 3 colleges(one of them govt. run), 27 high schools, 80 govt. primary schools, 41 non-govt. primary schools, 59 madrassas, 1 school for the deaf and dumb and 1 commercial school in this upazila. Noted educational institutions are: Government Fazlul Huq College (1940), Banaripara Union Institution (1889), [[Baisari High School{1880}]] and Nalasree Government Primary School (1910).
