Ballast Point is the name of a neighborhood and a public park located in Tampa, Florida along Tampa Bay. As of the 2000 census, the district had a total population of 17,186. Its park was previously called Jules Verne Park before its name change to Ballast Point Park. Recent renovations in 2006 have a new playground and walks. A pier restoration was recently completed.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of 3.8 mi². 3.8 mi² of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there are 5,361 people and 2,494 households in the district. The population density is 4,579 per square mile. The racial makeup of the district is 81% White, 7% Black or African American, 0% Native American, 3% Asian and Pacific Islander, and 2% from two or more races. 8% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the district the population is spread out with 6.1% under 5 years; 6% 5 to 9 years; 10.6% 10 to 19 years; 31.9% 20 to 39 years; 29.4% 40 to 59 years; 12.8% 60 to 79 years; and 3.1% 80 Years and Over. For every 100 females, there are 98 males.

9% of all households had a female householder with no husband present. The per capita income for the neighborhood was $34,200. About 10% of the population were below the poverty line.
