Balamku

Balamku is a small Maya site that was only discovered in 1990. However, it is one of the most fascinating Maya sites in the Mexican province of Campeche. It has one of the largest surviving stucco friezes in the Maya world. Balamku (Black Jaguar) was occupied from around 300 BC. Its most important buildings date from AD 300-600. The most outstanding discovery so far at Balamku is the "Templo de los Frisos ("Temple of the Friezes"). Excavations have uncovered an intact, 20 meter-long painted stucco frieze dating from AD 550-650. It depicts an array of: mythological creatures, giant frogs, rising kings, serpents and jaguars.
