History

A place like other places has a name of its own. Contrary to the fact that there was a place without a name for it was a part of three different barrios. Few families inhabited the place who did not bother to name it. There were prominent persons living in the barrio as for example the last Huwes de Paz during the last quarter of the Spanish rule, the late Carlos Mendoza Bongo and the late Mayor Pedro Basubas after the liberation. Even if the families were scattered far apart, they know each other well and there was intimacy among them. The birds that live in the bamboo groves and in the buri palms.

In the year 1928 the energetic young men and women led by the late Castor Pascual and the late Estanisia Ruelan conveyed together. They agreed to put up a chapel so that the place will be lively. All agreed that they will name it Bakilid chapel since it is located near the Bakilid road which is a permanent landmark. Another group led by late Lieutenant Ramon Villamor and the late Apolonta Centza organized a basketball team and named it Bakilid. From that time on, the name Bakilid rung on the ears of all Mandawehanons.

Some businessmen begun scouting the place for business and industry. In 1951 two business-minded men Mr. Norberto A. Quisumbing Sr. and Mr. Tersa Duman who later became a congressman in the 7th District of Cebu put the first factory in the place. This improved the lives of the people.

In 1956 the creation of the old Philippine Railway to a national highway paved the way for the bright future of the sitio. This was an ideal place for business and industrial firms for its accessibility of transportation. Another business minded Lawyer, Norberto B. Quisumbing Jr. put up an assembly plant of motorcycles the Norkis Trading Company Incorporated (YAMAHA) Later on, it grew to be Norkis Group of Companies. He showed his initiative and benevolence by setting up a chapel and a playground for children which greatly improved the place. The name Bakilid was written in the annals of history of Mandaue when on January 10, 1972 the resolution was approved creating it into a barrio. It was sponsored by its son Honorable Comello Emelto Pascual in the City Council. On January 30, 1972 the inaugural and induction ceremonies of the elected barrio officials led by Barangay Captain Corazon Bontta Ruelan the wife of the organizer of the name Bakilid.

The fate, boom and growth of the barangay now depends upon the new generation.
