Until 2007 the cathedral of the Diocese of Galloway was located the Good Shepherd Cathedral, Ayr which was built in 1957. This Cathedral closed in 2007 due to falling parishioner levels and the increased costs required to maintain and update the building.
In early 2007 Pope Benedict XVI accepted the petition of Right Reverend John Cunningham, the seventh Bishop of Galloway, to move the seat to St Margaret's Church, Ayr. St Margaret's is the most recent church to be raised to the status of Roman Catholic cathedral in the United Kingdom.
