Ayanpuram (Tamil: அயன்புரம்) or Ayanavaram (Tamil: அயனாவரம்) is one of the many localities of Chennai and is located in West Chennai about 8 kilometres from the city center. The Konnur High Road, one of the important connecting roads in Chennai runs through Ayanavaram. Ayanavaram is one of the peripheral commercial areas of Chennai. Ayanpuram is the original name. Ayan means Brahma. When Lord Muruga admonished Brahma and took over the creation, it is believed that Brahma prayed to Lord Shiva and got his job back. It is believed that Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva here. It is in recognition of that Ayanpuram is named.
The Parasurama Eswarar Temple situated here is almost steeped in antiquity. Legend has it that Sage Parasurama killed his own mother at the order of his father, sage Jamdagini. Later according to the wish of Parasurama, Jamadagini also brought her back from death. Though she came back to life, because of the curse of killing a woman, sage parasurama prayed to Lord Shiva here and got his curse purged. Thus, the Lord Shiva here is called Parasurama Eswarar.
