Attiswil is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Attiswil is first mentioned in 1364 as Attenswile.[3]
Attiswil has an area, as of 2009[update], of 7.64 km2 (2.95 sq mi). Of this area, 4.06 km2 (1.57 sq mi) or 53.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while2.69 km2 (1.04 sq mi) or 35.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.84 km2 (0.32 sq mi) or 11.0% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.03 km2 (7.4 acres) or 0.4% is either rivers or lakes and 0.02 km2 (4.9 acres) or 0.3% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 0.4% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 5.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.7%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 2.0% of the area. 33.5% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 33.5% is used for growing crops and 14.9% is pastures, while 2.6% is used for orchards or vine crops and 2.1% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
The municipality is located near the Aare river, but since 1881 does not touch the river.
Attiswil has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 1,325.[1] As of 2007[update], 5.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -2.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (94.6%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 1.4%) and Italian being third ( 1.1%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 46.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (25.5%), the FDP (12.7%) and the Green Party (4.9%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 59.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.1%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Attiswil about 77.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Attiswil has an unemployment rate of 1.31%. As of 2005[update], there were 73 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 23 businesses involved in this sector. 98 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 22 businesses in this sector. 126 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 30 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
