Troy Athens High School is a public high school located in Troy, Michigan. It is attended by more than 1,600 students, serving grades 9-12. Athens is one of four high schools in the Troy School District, along with Troy High School, Niles Community High School, and International Academy East. Athens High School opened in 1973.

Academics

Troy Athens High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Athens has various courses in English, Science, History, etc., and the comprehensive curriculum includes 18 advanced placement (AP) courses from which to choose.[2] There are many academic clubs and events.

Athletics

As of 2010, Athens offers 13 varsity sports teams for boys and 13 varsity sports teams for girls. These sports include baseball, basketball, competitive cheer, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, waterpolo, and wrestling. Athens plays in one of the top competitive leagues in the State of Michigan, the Oakland Activities Association (OAA), with twenty-seven other member schools of the league, all under the regulation of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

Athens is a National and Michigan Exemplary School and has been named one of the best high schools (ranked 1032th in the 2010 Ranking) in the United States by Newsweek. [3]

Athens was named Michigan AP School of the Year by the College Board for its success rates for math, science and technology courses.

Athens and the Troy School District have been named one of America's Best Communities for Music Education.[4]

Athens Theater Company has been nominated by USA Weekend for National Recognition in the HSM Showstopper contest, for their performance of Disney's High School Musical, that was shown in the spring of 2008.[5]

Extracurricular activities

Athens High School students can participate in a many school sponsored clubs, including Forensics, Japanese, French, German, Karate, Medical, Physics, Ping Pong, Project LEAD, SADD, Environmental, MSA, Scarlet Letter, Science, Chemistry, Social Studies, Spanish, Math Club, Model UN, Debate, and Video, among others.[9]

Athens has an award winning Student Congress.

The Athens High School marching band is an award-winning group under the direction of Mr. P Jefferson McCoy. They participate in store openings, Thanksgiving Day Parade, Troy Daze Parade, the Oakland Mall Santa Parade, among other things. They are a competing marching corps band in the level of Flight 1. They have 3 drum majors who lead the band. They have been going to the MCBA State Finals at Ford Field in Detroit, MI, as well as Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, IN for many years. They also take trips to Orlando, Florida as well as other places. They also perform at Varsity Football Games during the half time show.

Cocurricular activities

Athens has an award winning Literary Magazine, The Scarlett Letter, and Yearbook, The Odyssey. Athens has a student-operated school store, The A Station, that is open during lunch hours. The school also has a student-operated restaurant, The Terrace Cafe, that is open for students, staff, and also the public.
