Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating university. The university has nine schools which offer Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Technology and Management Studies. There are 29 departments under these nine schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 51 undergraduate colleges.[2] Drawing its faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.

The campus, in an area of 600 acres (2.4 km2), is in Durgakona, about 20 km from Silchar. The university is in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland.
