Grimshaw comes from London, England, where he has trained with Jess Liaudin for several years.[2] Grimshaw is mostly known as a grappler, though he does possess wins by means of strikes.[2]
In May 2006, Grimshaw made his Cage Rage debut at a Cage Rage Contenders event against Ronnie Mann. After three rounds, the fight was declared a draw.[1]
Almost a year later, at Cage Rage 20, Grimshaw had a rematch with Mann. Grimshaw was controlled in the stand-up and the top position on the floor by Mann. Towards the end of the fight, Grimshaw attempted a comeback, utilising ground-and-pound offense, though Mann was declared the winner via unanimous decision after three rounds.[3]
Following the loss, Grimshaw joined the FX promotion, where he faced Phil Harris. In a result that was regarded as shocking,[4] Grimshaw was able to defeat Harris via punches in just 46 seconds. Harris was able to take Grimshaw down early on, but Grimshaw managed to get to his feet. Grimshaw then threw a right hook which let out a loud crack as it hit. Grimshaw followed it up with more punches, causing the referee to stop the fight, declaring Grimshaw the winner via TKO.[4]
The win was enough to see Grimshaw return to Cage Rage. However, he was out of competition for around five months after numerous opponent withdrawals kept him out of competition.[2] Grimshaw finally got an opponent for the Cage Rage Contenders 9 event in Cristian Binda. Grimshaw had an early understanding of his opponent's tactics, having watched his teammate, Dean Jones, defeat Binda via kimura.[2] Prior to the matchup, Grimshaw said: "I know he's not as submission savvy as he may think he is, and I've got quite a bit of height on him, so I might just bang him out!"[2] His prediction proved partly correct. Grimshaw had to pull guard early in the fight, but worked his way to full mount where he threw multiple punches to force a TKO victory.[5]
Grimshaw was rewarded with a Cage Rage British Featherweight Championship shot against the champion Robbie Olivier at Cage Rage 27. Grimshaw spent the opening round throwing unusual combinations, however, the second round saw Olivier take Grimshaw down before securing a rear naked choke.[6]
After the death of Cage Rage, Grimshaw joined Cage Gladiators and faced Mick Sinclair. Grimshaw lost his second successive fight via TKO.[7] A further fight for Cage Gladiators saw him improve the record at 6–5-1 (1), defeating future UFC fighter Vaughan Lee via triangle choke.[1]
A further win and loss ensued,[1] before Grimshaw joined BAMMA. His debut fight came at BAMMA 3, where he faced the experienced Paul Reed. Grimshaw won via TKO (punches).[8]
Grimshaw was scedueled to face John Cullen at BAMMA 5.[9] However due to snowstorms in the UK the event was cancelled.
