Antonio Karmona Herrera (born 24 March 1968 in Bermeo, Basque Country) is a retired Spanish football defender, best known for his Deportivo Alavés stint.
At the club - where he played seven full seasons and in nearly 300 official games - hard-working Karmona was the undisputed club captain.
After playing in the second division with Basque sides Sestao Sport Club (three seasons out of five) and SD Eibar, Karmona joined another club from the region and the category, Deportivo Alavés, in 1996. In his second season, he contributed with 40 games (3,600 minutes, with three goals) as the team returned to La Liga after an absence of more than 40 years.
Having played in all 38 league matches during 1998–99, Karmona captained Alavés to the 2000–01 UEFA Cup final, where they met Liverpool and eventually lost 4–5 due to an own golden goal by Delfí Geli. In an interview before the game, Karmona revealed he was a lifelong Liverpool fan;[1] he was sent off during extra time of the decisive match.
Aged 35, Karmona re-joined Eibar and played two more second level seasons before retiring. Subsequently, he worked with Athletic Bilbao's coaching staff during some time.
