Annabouboula[1] was a Greek-American musical trio that flourished in the 1980s and 1990s. Its members were Anna Paidoussi, George Sempepos, and Chris Lawrence, who are based in New York, New York and in Athens, Greece. An answers.com article opins that Paidoussi's voice is akin to that of Cowboy Junkies' Margo Timmons on speed.[2]
The group's style was steeped in eastern Mediterranean music and in Greek music in particular.
The group recorded an album in 1990 on Shanachie Records. The liner notes say, "What they did was take a traditional belly dance and rembetiko music (smokey Greek blues) and electrify them, adding a funky rhythm and a wild psychedelic undertow to these dark and moody songs of passion and heartbreak."
