Ankenes

Ankenes is a former municipality which now forms part of the municipality of Narvik in Nordland county, Norway. Ankenes is a largely residential area of Narvik, located on the southern side of Beisfjorden, a south arm of Ofotfjorden.

History

Dating from 1837 Ankenes, together with the district of Evenes, constituted Ofoten formannskapsdistrikt . On January 1, 1884 Ofoten was split, making Ankenes and Evenes separate municipalities. Ankenes had 1,734 inhabitants at this point. On January 1, 1902 the city of Narvik with 3,705 inhabitants was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3,023.On January 1, 1974 Ankenes became a part of Narvik. At that point Ankenes had a population of 7,022 inhabitants, Narvik had 12,758.

European route E6 is the main thoroughfare through Ankenes and follows the shoreline area to Beisfjord. E6 crosses the fjord through the 375-meter Beisfjord Bridge.

Ankenes Church (Andenes kyrkje) is an octagonal church dating from 1842. It was built of timber and has 290 seats. Access to the site is via the E6. Ankenes is also known for Millerjordbukta, its shopping area and the local football team Hardhaus. Ankenes Skiing Resort (Ankenes Alpinsenter) is in Ankenesstrand. The facility has 8 runs and 2 lifts. The facility was established in 1972. In 1973, the Ankenes Alpine Club was also established.[1]
