Andy Hobsbawm

Andy Hobsbawm established the first international Internet agency in 1994^[1] and was a founding director of leading British new media company Online Magic which merged with Agency.com in 1997.^[2] He is the co-founder of Green Thing^[3] and Evrythng^[4] and is currently a digital media consultant^[5] and non-executive director. Previously he was European MD then Chairman of Agency.com until 2009.^[6] He is the son of noted British historian Eric J. Hobsbawm.^[7]

Career highlights

• Created the world's first commercial eZine, PowerPC News, with Internet Publishing (1993)^[8]
• Co-founded Online Magic with Eamonn Wilmott, the first international online agency (1995)^[9]
• Online Magic broke new ground with an award-winning^[10] interactive UK election coverage in 1997.^[11] Hobsbawm, Wilmott and creative director Michael Martin and their team launched a groundbreaking original interactive content production 'GE97' covering the UK general elections online, which the Financial Times called "a watershed for the Web in this country".
• Weekly columnist about the new economy for the Financial Times weekend magazine^[12]
• A member of GartnerG2's first online advertising advisory board
• Published a widely acclaimed report on the global impact of communications technologies: 10 Years On: The State of the Internet a decade after Mosaic (2003)^[13]
• Currently writing “Small is the Next Big Thing – the Size and Shape of Commerce and Culture”^[14]
• Launched environmental community Green Thing in October 2007^[15]
• Contributed a chapter on the future of brands in a digital world for The Economist book on Brands and Branding, published in May 2009.^[16]
• Co-founded 'Internet of Things' software company Evrythng in November 2009^[17]

Recognition

• In 2010 Andy was named in Wired magazine’s list of the UK’s "Top 100 Digital Power Brokers"^[18]
• On behalf of Green Thing, Andy was awarded the AICA (International Association for Environmental Communication) Prize of environmental communication 2010 for "Communicating the Kyoto Protocol"^[19]
• Recognised by industry professionals as one of most influential 100 individuals who have most contributed to the development and growth of e-commerce and the Internet in the UK over the last decade^[20] and also received a Special Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005^[21]
• Voted New Media Innovator of the Year and named by industry peers as one of the most admired digital pioneers in Campaign Magazine^[22]
• Featured as one of the Top 50 Internet Professionals in the UK for Internet Business Magazine^[23]
• Featured in 20/20 Hindsight: From Starting Up to Successful Entrepreneur, by Those Who've Been There (Virgin Business Guides) (2002)
