Club career

Schürrle started his career at Ludwigshafener SC before joining 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2006. He spent three years playing for the club's youth teams, where he won the German A Youth Championship in 2009. In August 2009, Schürrle made his Bundesliga debut in a 2–2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.[1] Soon after on 19 September 2009, Schürrle scored his first two league goals in a 3–2 away win against VfL Bochum before signing a professional contract with the club later in the week.[2] He finished the season with five goals and three assists. In September 2010, it was announced that Schürrle had signed a five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen, and would join the club at the end of the season. The transfer fee agreed between the two clubs was believed to be in the region of 8 million euro.[1] In his last season playing for Mainz 05, he scored 15 goals in 34 Bundesliga matches, having thus surpassed the former Mainz player Mohamed Zidan as top scorer for Mainz 05 in one season (Zidan had scored 14 goals in 2006–07).

International career

Schürrle made his debut in a U19 European Championship qualifying match against Luxembourg, which resulted in a 3–0 win. After impressing for Mainz in the Bundesliga he was called up to the Germany U21 team in 2009. He has since played four matches scoring three goals, his first U21 against San Marino U21 in an 11–0 win.

In November 2010, Schürrle received a call up to the senior German national team.[3] He subsequently made his debut in a friendly against Sweden, appearing as a substitute in the 79th minute. Schürrle and Mario Götze, who came on simultaneously, were the first two German international players to be born in reunified Germany.[4] He scored for the first time in the senior national team on 29 May 2011 during a friendly with Uruguay.
