History

It was introduced in 1916. It was sold in a red and green packet, similar to most Kellogg's cereals. It was introduced in the UK in 1922.

Marketing

From 1933 in the UK it spoke of freeing people from constipation in a natural way - the tag line was the gentle natural way to relieve constipation. It claimed that the cause of nearly all health depression was constipation, and therefore All Bran was a cure for depression. In was the early 1930s and many people were depressed. More believably, it claimed to improve energy levels, and as a consequence make people less lazy. It told people to come over to the sunny side of life. At that time the product was imported, being made in Canada. It proclaimed the cereal's high fibre for the intestines, Vitamin B for the intestinal tract, and iron for the blood (haemoglobin), and said that doctors recommended it. Most cereals are now vitamin-fortified. It claimed to be 100% bran and to achieve 100% results. However it also claimed to be delicious.

By 1936 it was proclaiming that it could salvage people's deteriorating complexion because it cleared the intestines of wastes and impurities. It claimed it could transform an unhappy person into a cheerful person, a new variation on its earlier theme of curing depression. It claimed it could make people smile again, due to curing their constipation and purging their intestines of their unhealthy impurities and poisons.

The 1981 James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only features a product placement of All-Bran, in the kitchen cabinet of 10 Downing Street.

Production

It was made in Manchester until early 1978, when Kellogg's plant on the Wrexham Industrial Estate opened. In the mid-1970s, consumers became much more educated about the value of roughage in their diet, and demand for All Bran was outstripping of supply. This led to shortages in shops - the Manchester plant on Trafford Park could not make enough. From 1974-77 demand for All Bran doubled, with sales increasing 35% in 1975, and supplies to shops from warehouses had to be rationed. It led to panic buying when packets of All Bran were available.

The new £14 million factory at Wrexham opened in May 1978. Construction had started in July 1976.
