Alexander Aristides Reid[1] (born 21 July 1975) is an English mixed martial artist, kickboxer and actor who used the nickname The Reidernator.[2][3] Reid has fought for Cage Rage, BAMMA and Cage Rage UK. Throughout his MMA career he has fought some of the most well known fighters, especially from the earlier days of the UFC, such as former welterweight champion Dave Menne and UFC 14 middleweight finalist Tony Fryklund, he has also faced Murilo 'Ninja' Rua, Tom Watson, Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Mark Weir and Jorge Rivera.

He became a celebrity in Britain when he began to date the glamour model Katie Price. He won Celebrity Big Brother in January 2010. Reid and Price married in February 2010 and separated in January 2011. In 2012 Reid is set to star in a new reality TV programme entitled 'Tribe'. Reid will join the Ekari people prior to the show. It is rumoured that comic Mark Watson and model Jodie Marsh will also be on the show.

Early life

Reid was born in Aldershot, Hampshire.[4] His parents are Bob and Carol; he has five siblings.[5]

He was known as Zander by his family, when he was younger. In 1991, Reid was a member of the Hampshire Scout unit that was visiting Japan & South Korea, taking part in the 17th World Scout Jamboree at Mt Sorak National Park.

In 1996 Reid enlisted with 10th (Volunteer) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (10 PARA), a Territorial Army unit based in London and spent 3 years training as a recruit before being discharged.[6]

Acting career

In 1998 Reid studied on the one-year acting course at the Guildford School of Acting, in Surrey. In his first TV appearance, Reid was a contestant on the hit ITV Show, Gladiators,[7] and also had a recurring background role in the ITV drama, Soldier Soldier.[8] In 1998, Reid had a small role as an extra in Sliding Doors, during the launch of Clive's Restaurant. He was also in the film, Saving Private Ryan as a stand in for Tom Hanks.[9] Reid later played Jason Cunliffe in the Channel 4 soap-opera Hollyoaks, which he left in 2001. He made an appearance in the comedy My Hero in the following year. At this time he used the stage name "Alex Thorne".

After a period away from acting, he appeared in the film Killer Bitch[10] which was released in 2010;[11] the film was described as pornographic and received terrible pre-release coverage.[12][13][14] The film was made when he was still largely unknown, working as fighter and doorman, but released after he had become a celebrity. Reid failed to show up at the Premiere of the film at the Curzon Cinema, Mayfair drawing criticism from the cast of the film. He had previously attacked the producers for 'using him for publicity', though he had walked out of the film without completing the role causing a complete shut down of the production for 6 weeks. He was replaced by ex-World Champion boxer Robin Reid (no relation). In June 2010, Robin challenged Reid to a boxing match.[12][13][14]

Mixed martial arts career

Reid first got in to martial arts at 14 and with time turned to mixed martial arts: "It was just a natural progression. I started off doing kung fu, karate-style tournaments before moving on to boxing, kickboxing, a little bit of judo, jiu-jitsu. MMA was a natural progression for a young lad wanting to find the latest and best style. It's just the most efficient and effective blend of martial arts really."[15]

Cage Rage

After making his professional debut in 2000, Reid was a regular fixture for the Cage Rage Championships between 2004 and 2007. During this period, he faced a number of international fighters such as Daijiro Matsui, Dave Menne, Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Tony Fryklund, Jorge Rivera and Murilo "Ninja" Rua. On 22 September 2007, Reid face Matt Ewin for the Cage Rage British Middleweight Championship at Cage Rage 23: Unbelievable where he lost via unanimous decision. Despite losing six of his nine fights with the promotion, Reid was known for his good chin and fighting spirit.

Following a two year hiatus from the sport, Reid tried out for the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2009 but lost his tryout match to Dean Amasinger by unanimous decision. Reid attempted many triangle chokes throughout the match and had Amasinger locked in twice, but failed to finish the match and make it in to the house.

vs. Tom 'Kong' Watson

On 15 May 2010, Reid was scheduled to return to the cage professionally for the first time since 2007 to face Tom "Kong" Watson for the vacant BAMMA Middleweight Championship at BAMMA 3.[16] However, Reid injured his knee while filming his documentary TV series Alex Reid: The Fight of His Life and was forced to pull out of the fight.[17] This angered Watson, who claimed Reid was disrespecting him.[18] Watson also called him a "clown" and said that it was likely Reid pulled out to avoid an embarrassing defeat.[19]

Reid was then replaced by UFC and IFL veteran Matt Horwich, who Watson beat by decision to win the title. The Reid-Watson bout was then rescheduled for BAMMA 4 on 25 September 2010 and he caused further controversy by showing up for the official weight-ins three hours late.

After a 5 round war, the judges gave the win to Watson, scoring the bout 49–46, 49–46 and 49–47. Reid won the first round with effective striking and aggression, which did have 'Kong' struggling to maintenance his composure, but was then outstruck by Watson for the majority of the next four rounds. The public overall gave Reid respect for showing his fighting heart and good chin he is famous for.[20]

Brief retirement and fight vs. Barrett

On 14 May 2011, Reid announced his retirement from MMA at an Cage Rage UK event in London. However, he did not rule out a return to the sport in future.[21]

For many weeks, Jason Barrett has been calling out Reid, following Reid to his gym and getting aggressive, almost fighting him inside the UCMMA cage during an interview between Reid and Dave o'Donnell, and, in a serious incident, Barrett took a megaphone down to a restaurant on Old Compton Street in Soho to interrupt Reid and his girlfriend Chantelle, who were dining there. After being threatening, Reids security went outside to ask him to leave him alone, but refused to move. This then promted Reid to walk outside, and ended up with Barrett attacking Reid's security before attempting to go for Alex. After being pulled away from each other, Barrett vowed he would 'following him everywhere until he signed the contract'. Alex verbally agreed.[22]

Confirmed by the Cage Rage UK website, Alex Reid is set to face Jason Barrett in a 'Super Title' fight at UCMMA 22 on the 6 August. This marks the end of his early retirement and his first fight since his 2010 bout with Tom "Kong" Watson.[23]

During the press conference, Barrett apologised for his antics to get the fight with Reid, disencouraged anyone from doing them to get their fights, and vowed to knock Reid out. At the end of the conference, Dave O'Donnell asked them both to square up for the media shot with their hands up, Barrett put his hands up as Dave requested and Alex refuse, instead standing up close to his face, which then Barrett pushed him away for being disrespectful. Alex began walking away, but O'Donnell asked Alex to come back, which he did, and both men squared up again, this time either of them put their hands up. Because of Barrett pushing Reid, Dave O'Donnell vowed to take 10% of Barrett's fight purse for every time he does any bad antic like that or anything he has already done up to that point.[24]

During the weigh-ins the day prior to the fight, both men weighed in at just under the 185 pound mark, being 184 and 183 respectively. For the camera shot of both men squared up to each other, Reid again refused to put his hands up, but instead kissed Barrett on the lips, which infuriated him and he had to be held back by UCMMA officials. Reid was laughing at his reaction, and vowed he would apologise 'after the fight'.[25]

On 6 August, Alex Reid defeated Jason Barrett, via triangle choke in the first round, marking his first win in 6 years in MMA and claimed the 'super title' in the process,[26]

Kickboxing career

Despite struggling to gain a win in MMA for 6 years, Reid has had success in kickboxing during 2009, winning the UK1 Middleweight title in Cage Rage UK, defeating the likes of John Maguire, Jake Bostwick and Jack Mason during the course of the year.[27] He dropped the title in early 2010 so he could enter the 7th series of Celebrity Big Brother and to focus on his MMA return fight against Tom Watson for BAMMA 3. Mark Weir would later win that title.

Celebrity Big Brother

On 3 January 2010 he became the third person to enter the Celebrity Big Brother House UK and was one of twelve housemates in the 7th series of Celebrity Big Brother. As he entered the Big Brother House he was referred to as "Jordan's current squeeze" and many references were made in the house about their relationship.

Tabloids reported of a brawl on 1 January 2010 between Reid and Price's ex-boyfriend Dane Bowers – who would also be appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. Reid stated just before going into the Big Brother house that he did not have a brawl with Bowers.[28] Chants of 'fight, fight, fight' were heard as Bowers arrived on stage just before entering the Big Brother house. Both Reid and Bowers denied that there had been any altercation between them and they became good friends in the house with Bowers branding Reid a "loveable prat".

Reid was heavily booed on his entry, which he acknowledged saying "this is why I'm here, to hopefully change these boos into cheers" during his time in the house. He managed to win over the public and on 29 January he won the show with 65% of the vote, with Bowers finishing as runner-up. As Reid left the house he was cheered with the crowd chanting "Rocky, Rocky". This was a reference to the nickname given to him by third placed finalist Vinnie Jones. During his interview with Davina McCall he mentioned Price by announcing that he is a "man in love". This prompted boos from the crowd and chants of "dump her!" with McCall saying that Price's name had been like that of Voldemort in Harry Potter, in the house. Reid responded by saying a "sorry" to the crowd before quickly saying "no actually I'm not" and shouting "I love Katie Price". Towards the end of series Big Brother arranged a party for all of the housemates, with awards. Reid was awarded 'Greediest Housemate' and 'Least Intelligent Housemate'.

Personal life

Reid began dating English glamour model Katie Price on 17 July 2009, thus becoming embroiled in intense publicity in Britain following Price's divorce from Peter Andre.[29][30] It was claimed by Price on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in November 2009 that the relationship "was over", though not long afterwards it appeared to remain intact.[31]

On 2 February 2010, Reid and Price married in Las Vegas.[32] In July 2010 they had a wedding blessing held at their home for their family and friends to be there. The occasion was held at their Woldingham house, the house Katie Price shared with Peter Andre. The actual blessing was held at their local church in Woldingham. On 18 January 2011, Price announced they had separated.[33]

Reid is now currently engaged to glamour model and fellow Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton.[34] after proposing live on the RTE programme, the Saturday Night Show.

When not competing he works as a personal trainer.

On 15th November Chantelle announced that she was pregnant with the couple's first child.
