The name of the village can be split into two parts, 'ald' which roughly means 'old', and 'clif' which means 'high ground'.
'Aldeclif' is recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086.
In early years, Lancaster was becoming a difficult place to be Catholic, and Aldcliffe Hall became a place of Catholic worship.[1]
