English Translation of verses

English Translation by Muhammad Shameem, Mohammad Wali Raazi and Muhammad Taqi Usmani:[1]

O you, enveloped in a mantle, [1] stand up and warn, [2] and pronounce the greatness of your Lord, [3] and purify your clothes, [4] and keep away from filth, [5] and do no favour (to anyone merely) to ask more (in exchange), [6] and for the sake of your Lord, observe patience. [7] For when the trumpet is blown, [8] that day will be a difficult day, [9] not easy for the disbelievers. [10] Leave me (to deal) with the one whom I have created lonely, [11] and I gave him extensive wealth, [12] and sons present before (his) eyes, [13] and extended (power and honour) to him fairly well. [14] Still, he aspires that I should give him more. [15] Never! He is inimical towards Our verses. [16] I will force him to climb (the mountain) sa'ud. [17] He pondered and suggested. [18] Death onto him! How (bad) is the suggestion he has put forward! [19] Again, death unto him! How (bad) is the suggestion he has put forward! [20] Then he looked (to those around him,) [21] then he frowned and scowled, [22] then turned his back, and waxed proud, [23] then said, "This is nothing but traditional magic; [24] this is nothing but saying of a mortal." [25] I will put him into Saqar (Hell). [26] And what can let you know what Saqar is? [27] It neither spares (anything inside it from burning) nor leaves (any disbeliever outside). [28] It will disfigure the skins. [29] Appointed on it are nineteen (wardens). [30] And We did not make wardens of the Fire but (from among) angels, and did not fix their number but as a test for those who disbelieve, so that those who are given the Book may come to believe, and those who believe may increase in belief, and so that those who are given the Book and those who believe may not doubt (its correctness), and so that those having malady in their hearts and the disbelievers say, "What has Allah meant by this (sentence that is as strange as a) proverb?" Thus Allah lets go astray whomever He wills, and leads to the right path whomever He wills. And no one knows the hosts of your Lord but He. And this is nothing else but a reminder for mankind. [31] Truly, I swear by the moon, [32] and by the night when it goes back, [33] and by the morning when it becomes bright, [34] it (saqar: Hell) is one of the greatest things [35] as a warning to the mankind, [36] to the one who wishes to come forward (towards good deeds) or to go back (from them). [37] Everyone will be detained (in the Hell) because of what he did, [38] except the People of the Right, (i.e. those who will be given their Book of Deeds in their right hands) [39] who will be in gardens, asking [40] about the guilty persons, [41] “What has brought you to? (Saqar: Hell)” [42] They will say, "We were not among those who offered salah(obligatory prayer) [43] and we used not to give food to the needy, [44] and we used to indulge (in mocking at the truth) along with those who indulged, [45] and used to deny the Day of Requital, [46] until when we were overtaken by that which is certain." [47] Then intercession of intercessors will not avail them. [48] So what has happened to them that they are turning away from the Reminder, [49] as if they were wild donkeys, [50] fleeing from a lion? [51] Rather, every one of them wishes that he should be given unrolled (divine) scriptures. [52] Never! But they do not fear the Hereafter. [53] Never! Indeed, this is a Reminder. [54] So, whoever so wishes may take advice from it. [55] And they will not take advice unless Allah so wills. He is worthy to be feared, and worthy to forgive. [56]

English Translation by Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall:[2][3]

O thou enveloped in thy cloak, [1] Arise and warn! [2] Thy Lord magnify, [3] Thy raiment purify, [4] Pollution shun! [5] And show not favor, seeking worldly gain! [6] For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! [7] For when the trumpet shall sound, [8] Surely that day will be a day of anguish, [9] Not of ease, for disbelievers. [10] Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, [11] And then bestowed upon him ample means, [12] And sons abiding in his presence [13] And made (life) smooth for him. [14] Yet he desireth that I should give more. [15] Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. [16] On him I shall impose a fearful doom. [17] For lo! he did consider; then he planned [18] (Self) destroyed is he, how he planned! [19] Again (self) destroyed is he, how he planned! [20] Then looked he, [21] Then frowned he and showed displeasure. [22] Then turned he away in pride [23] And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; [24] This naught else than speech of mortal man. [25] Him shall I fling unto the burning. [26] Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! [27] I leaveth naught; It spareth naught [28] It shrivelleth the man. [29] Above it are nineteen. [30] We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. [31] Nay, by the Moon [32] And the night when it withdraweth [33] And the dawn when it shineth forth. [34] Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) [35] As a warning unto men, [36] Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. [37] Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; [38] Save these who will stand on the right hand. [39] In gardens they will ask one another [40] Concerning the guilty: [41] What hath brought you to this burning? [42] They will answer: We were not of those who prayed [43] Nor did we feed the wretched. [44] We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, [45] And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, [46] Till the inevitable came unto us. [47] The mediation of no mediators will. avail them then. [48] Why now turn they away from the Admonishment [49] As they were frightened asses [50] Fleeing from a lion? [51] Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah). [52] Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter. [53] Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment. [54] So whosoever will may heed. [55] And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy. [56]

English Translation by Yusuf Ali: .[4][5]

O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! [1] Arise and deliver thy warning! [2] And thy Lord do thou magnify! [3] And thy garments keep free from stain! [4] And all abomination shun! [5] Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! [6] But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! [7] Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, [8] That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- [9] Far from easy for those without Faith. [10] Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- [11] To whom I granted resources in abundance, [12] And sons to be by his side!- [13] To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! [14] Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- [15] By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! [16] Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! [17] For he thought and he plotted;- [18] And woe to him! How he plotted!- [19] Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- [20] Then he looked round; [21] Then he frowned and he scowled; [22] Then he turned back and was haughty; [23] Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; [24] "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" [25] Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! [26] And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? [27] Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- [28] Darkening and changing the colour of man! [29] Over it are Nineteen. [30] And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this ?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. [31] Nay, verily: By the Moon, [32] And by the Night as it retreateth, [33] And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- [34] This is but one of the mighty (portents), [35] A warning to mankind,- [36] To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- [37] Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds. [38] Except the Companions of the Right Hand. [39] (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other, [40] And (ask) of the Sinners: [41] "What led you into Hell Fire?" [42] They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; [43] "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; [44] "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; [45] "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, [46] "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain." [47] Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them. [48] Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- [49] As if they were affrighted asses, [50] Fleeing from a lion! [51] Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! [52] By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, [53] Nay, this surely is an admonition: [54] Let any who will, keep it in remembrance! [55] But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. [56]
