Ailum is a town and a nagar panchayat in Prabuddhanagardistrict]] in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Ailum had a population of 13,052. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Ailum has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 62% of the males and 38% of females literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Ailum is a town situated at a distance of 68 km from Shahdra on the Shahdra Saharanpur BG Rly and 72 km from Delhi on Delhi-Yamunotri State high way 57 via Saharan Pur.

Ailum, when it was not even a famed village provided place for hiding to King Bahu who disappeared after the defeat in 3rd battle of Panipat. He later suicided here by burning himse4lf in a peepal tree. The remains of his palace, known as Bahu ka Qila were here up to late nineteen fifties.

Ailum is the native place of the famous Hindi poet Shamsher Bahadur Singh who was called poet's poet by none less than Sachidananda Heeranand Vatsysyan Ajnyaiy. It is also the birth and native place of national poet Vishrant Vasisth who has written more than fifty books and edits a weekly news paper Samvad Vimarsh from Ailum itself. Poet Rajendra Rajan also hails from ailum.

Justice Mahaveer Singh also hailed from Ailum who has the reputation to write maximum judgements in Hindi as a judge of Allahabad High court.

Ailum became a town and had nagar panchayat for the first time in 1995.Mr. Ramakrishna Panwar aretired primary school teacher in Himachal Pradesh,was elected first chairman of Nagar Panchayat Ailum in the same year.He was succeeded by an enthusiastic youth of the town and famous for his social and political activities now a days his family is making their remark in good education & services, Sri Rajveer Singh in the year 2000, who was murdered by some antisocial elements encouraged by a politician of the town. His wife Rajdulari Devi won the elections in the next term in 2006, as the town came under reservation for female category.
