The village is located in the central part of the island, WNW of the city of Zakynthos, north of Keri and southeast of Volimes. The nearest localities are Kato Gerakari to the north, Psareika or Psaraiika to the east, and Drakas to the west.
The island of Zakynthos was ruled by the Venetians until the Napoleonic Wars. A period of French rule was followed by the autonomous Septinsular Republic, and again by French rule as part of the Illyrian provinces. After 1815, Zakynthos became a part of the British-controlled United States of the Ionian Islands, until 1864 when they were united with Greece.
After Italian occupation in World War II and the Greek Civil War, almost every building in the villages was destroyed in the 1953 Ionian Earthquake. The village was rebuilt by the late-1950s and early 1960s. It was electrified during the late 1960s.
