History

IIT Hyderabad started in 2008 from a temporary campus at Ordnance Factory (ODF), Eddumailaram village. Its permanent campus will be located at Kandi near Sangareddy and is close to the Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad). United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi on 27th Feb 2009 laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) in Andhra Pradesh's Medak district.[4]

Campus

IIT Hyderabad permanent campus will be located at Kandi (near to Sangareddy) to on the outskirts of Hyderabad city in a 550-acre (2.2 km2) campus. The campus is located on NH-9 and is also near to Outer Ring Road (Hyderabad). It is expected that all operations will be shifted to the main campus by mid-2013. It is about 50 km from the Secunderabad Railway station. The Bhoomi Puja (ground breaking ceremony) for the construction work on the permanent campus was on 6 October 2011.[5]

The temporary campus of IIT Hyderabad is located in the residential campus of Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK) at Eddumailaram (Medak District, Andhra Pradesh), about 45 km from the heart of Hyderabad city. The academic blocks are newly renovated buildings of Sarath Vikas School Campus, in a walled compound of approximately 40 acres (0.16 km2). Facilities include hostels, classrooms, offices, recreation, sports and medical facilities.[6]

Departments

IIT Hyderabad has seven engineering departments which include departments of Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. There are also three science departments, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and a department of Liberal Arts

Academics

IIT Hyderabad offers undergraduate B.Tech degrees in four disciplines in Engineering, postgraduate and research degrees across six disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Liberal Arts. About 70 faculty belonging to various science and engineering departments of the Institute are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy. IIT Hyderabad is also planning to start inter-disciplinary courses.[7] Indian Institutes of Technology hyderabad is soon starting producing doctors.[8][9]

Admission

Admission to Undergraduate programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination to IITs, conducted every year, with more than 400,000 candidates taking it. It is considered one of the toughest competitive exams in the world with an acceptance ratio of less than 2%. Typically, the cutoffs for admission to IIT Hyderabad have been higher than those of other new IITs, as observed for the past 3 years.

Admission to M.Tech programs requires B.Tech./B.E. degree or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid GATE score. Admission to M.Sc program requires B.Sc or an equivalent degree with 65% for GE/OBC, 60% for SC/ST or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. (JAM) score. Admission to Ph.D Program requires either B.Tech/GATE qualification for engineering departments with good academic background or M.Tech/GATE qualification for engineering departments or NET qualification for Science departments.

Other academic activities

Among all the new IITs in the country IIT Hyderabad has been making fast progress on the research side apart from providing regular B.Tech programmes.[10]

Research & Industrial Consultancy

IIT Hyderabad has been allocated projects from various industrial and government funding agencies. The project "Development of High-Energy Density Li-ion Batteries for Mobile Applications" entails developing state-of-the-art electrode materials for Li-ion batteries and fabricating the batteries. ARCI, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad,is embarking on an ambitious program to develop High-Energy Density Batteries. IIT Hyderabad is also involved in the DISANET project for disaster mitigation, an Indo-Japanese collaboration. [11]

Student activities

Elan Elan is the annual social and cultural festival of IITH. So far, there have been three editions of Elan held in 2009, 2010 and 2011. It is usually held in the spring(January/February). It includes workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and technical exhibitions. Competitive activities cover design events, programming, simulations and modeling, quizzes, applied engineering, robotics. [12]
