The Batang Baram Bridge or ASEAN Bridge is the longest bridge in Miri Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. The bridge is located along Miri-Baram Highway (Federal route ). The official opening ceremony of the bridge was held on 30 August 2003 by The Right Honourable the Chief Ministers of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Project Location

The ASEAN Bridge is located approximately 2 km upstream of the New Miri Port Complex. The bridge and access road directly link Sarawak with Brunei across the Batang Baram via the existing Immigration Checkpoint at Sungai Tujuh.

Project Background

Construction of the ASEAN Bridge and access road commenced on 17 January 2001 and scheduled for completion in a contract period of 42 months on 16 July 2004. With a team of dedicated engineers, construction personnel, contractors and assisted by all relevant helpful government authorities, especially Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR), the whole project was completed in August 2003.

The Project

A total length of 7.769 km complete with access road and 2 lanes dual carriage way Balanced Cantilever Concrete Bridge.

Bridge Design

The bridge is designed in accordance with the latest British Standard BS 5400. The bridge has 19 spans with a total of 1040 meters.

Main Span

A total length of 400 meters comprising a 180 meters main span and 110 meters anchor span on either side constructed using Balanced Cantilever Construction Method.

A navigation Clearance of 20 meters (height) by 100 meters (width). The highest bridge deck level is 28.0 meters above Mean Water level.

Each Carriage Way is 8.0 meters wide (2 lanes) together with a 1.5 meter width concrete footpath separated by a central New Jersey concrete Barrier.

Approach Span

A total length of 640 meters comprising 16 spans of 10 numbers 40-meter length Precast Concrete T-Beams.

Access Road

A total length of 6.729 km comprising a toll plaza with office and a round about joining the existing road to Sungai Tujuh Immigration Checkpoint.

The road width is 7.5 meters with hard shoulder on each side.
