The APBA Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the Gold Cup, is a hydroplane boat race and is the second official race of the 2010 H1 Unlimited season. The race is scheduled to be held July 9–11, 2010 on the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan, USA.[1] Due to a last minute sponsorship, the 2010 races will officially be known as "the Grosse Point Yacht Club presents the Jarvis Property Restoration Detroit APBA Gold Cup".[1]

History

The Gold Cup is the oldest active trophy in all of motorsports. The trophy was first awarded in 1904. Hydroplane racing became a tradition in Detroit when designer Christopher Columbus Smith (of the Chris-Craft boat company) built a Detroit-based boat that would crack the 60 miles-per-hour speed barrier, capturing the Gold Cup in 1915.

* Declared No Contest because of weather on July 13, 2008 that cancelled final two heats and Gold Cup Final. U-5 Formulaboats.com was leading Gold Cup points after qualifying and first two heat races held July 12. The American Boat Racing Association ruled on July 16 all Gold Cup heat races count towards the National Points Championship, since a minimum of three boats had started the first heat (Rule 5, Section E).[2]
