6IX

6IX is historically one of the earlier radio stations in Perth, Western Australia, initially run by W.A. Broadcasters Limited. Currently it is a joint venture radio station run by Capital Radio Network and Grant Broadcasters. It plays mainly classic songs of the 1950s to 1980s.

In Western Australia, 6IX broadcasts on the 1080 AM frequency. Listeners in Joondalup or Rockingham can tune in at 105.7 FM.

History

The official opening of Radio Station 6IX was by the President of the Western Australian Legislative Council Sir John Kirwan, on 30 November 1933. The station originally broadcast on the frequency 1470 kHz until 1935 when it was moved to 1080 kHz.

In 1988, 6IX was bought by the Austereo Radio Network with a view to obtaining one of the two AM-FM conversions licences to be made available in Perth. Austereo assigned the station a new call-sign 6GL and the station was branded on-air as The Eagle 1080 AM. However, Austereo failed to obtain one of the AM-FM conversions on auction and subsequently sold the radio station to regional operator Radio West who re-instated the original 6IX call-sign.

From 2005 6IX had the catchphrase, 'Good Times, Great Music', but changed to 'Forever Classic' in 2010 (this slogan also used by sister stations 2CA, 2GN and 2XL).
