The 61st Illinois Infantry was originally organized at Carrollton, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on February 5, 1862.
The regiment was mustered out on September 27, 1865.
The regiment suffered 3 officers and 34 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 4 officers and 183 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 224 fatalities.[1]
