3,4-(Methylenedioxy)phenyl-1-propanone (MDP1P) is an aromatic ketone structurally related to 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl-2-propanone (MDP2P).

MDP1P is a common precursor in the synthesis of methylone and various other substituted methylenedioxy- phenethylamine derivatives.

Importantly, this compound is not made from safrole, least not in the most common synthesis that is known.

MDP1P is actually made via the action of EtMgBr on piperonylonitrile (aka 1,3-benzodioxole-5-carbonitrile).

Also bear in mind that this is the chemical process that is also used in the manufacture of MDPV, although a different choice of alkylating agent and amine are chosen.
