The earthquake in Skåne County occurred on December 16, 2008, and affected the southern part of Sweden and the eastern part of Zealand (Denmark). The epicenter was ca 10 km southwest of Sjöbo. This was the largest earthquake in Sweden since 1986, with a quake at 4.3 on the Richter magnitude scale.[1] The earthquake occurred at 05.20 UTC (6.20 local) in the morning, and was felt by people in Sweden all the way from Skåne and up to Östergötland, as well as in parts of Denmark and northern Poland.[2]

Powerful earthquakes are very rare in Sweden, which lies on a thick and cold crust.[3] The Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark was investigated for cracks and other problems but nothing was found.[1]
