The 1999 MTV Europe Music Awards was held in Dublin at The Point with Ronan Keating returning as host. The all-star line-up included Mariah Carey performing "Heartbreaker", Britney Spears performing "...Baby One More Time" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and picking up four awards. The Cardigans, Jamiroquai, Marilyn Manson and The Corrs all performed and Iggy Pop opened the show with a version of "Lust for Life", which went on for an unplanned seven minutes and featured no less than 17 choruses.

Presenters included model and actress Carmen Electra, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Spice Girl's Geri Halliwell and actress Denise Richards.

The Free Your Mind award was presented by Mick Jagger and given to U2's Bono for his world peace work.
