The first MTV Europe Music Awards opened with a bang in front Berlin's Brandenburg Gate three years after Berlin Wall was famously torn down.
Hosted by Welsh music maestro Tom Jones, the show featured performances by Aerosmith, Björk, Roxette and Take That. George Michael performed his classic track "Freedom" surrounded by a bevy of supermodels including Naomi Campbell.
Prince made Europe Music Awards history by stage diving into the crowd after jamming to "Peach" and Ace of Base entertained the German audience outside the venue in the shadow of the famous landmark with "Living in Danger".
The first Free Your Mind Award (given to Amnesty International) was collected by U2's Bono. Presenters included East 17, Jean Paul Gaultier, Naomi Campbell, Pamela Anderson and model Helena Christensen, who famously kissed INXS's Michael Hutchence live on stage.
