The 1987 Ecuador earthquakes occurred at 1:54 GMT and 4:10 GMT on March 6, 1987 with magnitudes of 6.1 and 6.9 on the surface wave magnitude scale, respectively.[1] The earthquakes were centered in Napo Province in northeast Ecuador; the epicenters were on the eastern slopes of the Andes, about 100 km ENE of Quito and 25 km north of Reventador Volcano.[2] The earthquakes caused an estimated 1,000 deaths and US$1 billion in damage.[2]
