1983 UK Championship (snooker)

The 1983 Coral UK Championship took place at the Guildhall, Preston from 21 November with TV stages shown on BBC TV took place between 26 November and 4 December 1983.

Alex Higgins staged one of the great recoveries of the game to beat Steve Davis 16–15 after losing the first session of the final 0–7, to win his only UK Championship title.

It was his first win over Davis since their 1980 World Championship quarter-final, and came at a time when Davis' domination of the snooker circuit had seen him win the last four televised tournaments. Davis looked unstoppable in the first session whitewash, but Higgins, playing a more cautious and tactical game than usual, contained his opponent who began to make mistakes. Higgins ended the first day's play 7–8 behind having won the evening session 7–1, and levelled at 8–8 the following day. Davis went on to lead 11–9, fell behind 12–14, led again 15–14, but Higgins eventually won 16–15, taking the deciding frame 77–0.
