Şefika Pekin was born in Fethiye, Turkey. When she was six, she moved with her family to the city of Izmir where she graduated from Izmir American College Institute for Girls in 1966 and attended the University of Sorbonne between 1966 and 1967.
In 1967, Pekin moved back to Turkey where she got married and had two children. Years later, she attended Istanbul University Law Faculty where she studied law between 1978 and 1982. After satisfying the requirements of the Istanbul Bar, she qualified as an attorney in 1983 and registered to the Istanbul Bar Association. [4]
Since 1983, Pekin has been at the helm of a large law firm located in Istanbul, Turkey. Her practice areas include mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, litigation, international arbitration, real-estate, finance, capital markets and foreign investment law.
She participated at the Bilderberg Bilderberg conference in St. Moritz on June 9–12, 2011.
On top of practicing law, Pekin also acts as a benefactor in the field of education. Pekin, together with her father Mr. Fethi Pekin, founded the Şefika Pekin Anatolian Vocational School for Girls (Anadolu Şefika Pekin Kız Meslek Lisesi). The construction of the school started in 1990 and was completed in 1992. When it was opened, the school was only able to provide education for 150 students. Today, it has 1000 students pursuing their studies, alongside the regular elementary and high school classes, in four major fields, namely development and education of children, graphic design, food/beverage and production technology,.
Besides being a co-founder of a school, Pekin is a member of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of Hisar Foundation School (HEV)[5] and a member of the Board of Trustees of Robert College[6] as well. Pekin also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Bilgi University between 2006 and 2008.
Pekin has been involved in the equestrian sport for nearly 40 years[7] . She qualified and served as a member of the Turkish National Ladies Equestrian Team between 1978 and 1998 and during this time she won numerous medals and trophies in national and international dressage and show-jumping competitions. She also served as the president of the Istanbul Equestrian Club between the years of 1998 and 2002.
Pekin is the mother of 3 children and has 5 grandchildren.
