Land Lines

To dial a land line in Thailand all over the country, the format is Area Code + Phone Number. Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani and a part of Samut Sakhon are the provinces with 2-digit area code (02) followed by a 7-digit phone number. For other provinces, the area code is 3-digit long, followed by a 6-digit phone number. This allows the caller to dial 9 digits regardless of the location the calling made. For example, calls made within Bangkok begin with 02 followed by 7-digit phone numbers, and calls made from Chiang Mai to Bangkok also begin with 02 followed by 7-digit numbers. Until July 5, 2001, Thailand was using open dialing plan, but then changed to closed dialing plan but trunk prefix still using, but by calling within same city needs area code.

Calls made from outside Thailand must omit the prefix 0. Therefore to call a land line number in Bangkok from other countries, dialing begins with +66 2 xxx xxxx.

Area codes

Call directions until July 5, 2001:

xxx-xxxx (within Bangkok)
02-xxx-xxxx (within Thailand)
+66 2-xxx-xxxx (from abroad)

Call directions since July 5, 2001:

02-xxx-xxxx (within Thailand)
+66 2-xxx-xxxx (from abroad)

When Thailand was using open dialing plan (until 2001), the caller have to dial seven digits if the caller lives in the same city as the opponent. In case not in Bangkok, the numbering system is 6 digits. But in area codes, the first three digits of subscriber numbers is the district, but the caller have to dial this three digits too, even the caller lives in the same district.

Mobile Phones

Likewise to call mobile phones from land line or mobile phones, dialing begins with 08 followed by 8-digit phone numbers. Mobile phone numbers in Thailand are one digit longer than land line numbers. Thailand had been using a 2-digit prefix for mobile phones (01, 06, 09, for example). In October 2006, The authority changed the system into a 3-digit prefix (01 became 081, 06 became 086, and so on by simply adding number 8 after 0) to reserve more numbers for both mobile phones and land lines outside 02 area as 04, 05 and 07 was used for mobile phones too. So mobile phone numbers in Thailand are 10 digits long while land lines are only 9 digits long.

Calls made from outside Thailand must omit the prefix 0. Therefore to call a mobile number in Thailand from other countries, dialing begins with +66 8 xxxx xxxx.

081 (originally 01) is the first area code for mobile phones, the area codes of mobile phones before adding 8 was 01, 04, 05, 06, 07 and 09, changed to 081, 084, 085, 086, 087 and 089. Before 2006, 02 is not used for mobile to avoid confusion with landlines, and the whole 02 is reserved for landlines, and 03 is not used because every 03x is reserved for landlines in provinces in central part. In 2007 to 2009, other 08x has been added (in chronological order): 083, 088, 082, 080. Now, mobile number portability is possible, and below is the natural carrier for numbers.
