At the age of 18, Pepe, alongside Ezequias, left Brazilian youth team Corinthians Alagoano and signed for the B-team of Portuguese first division outfit Marítimo, in the island of Madeira. After one season where he played 10 games, Pepe was promoted to the first team for 2002-03. He soon earned a place in the starting XI.
By the end of the season, under new manager Anatoliy Byshovets, Pepe played in several positions including defensive and attacking midfielder and as a supporting striker.
During the pre-season of 2003-04, Marítimo gave permission for the player to train with Sporting Club de Portugal for two weeks, after which a deal could be negotiated for his transfer. However, neither club could agree on terms and the move broke down, with Pepe returning to the Madeira club shortly after.
After another season he signed for FC Porto during the summer of 2004 for €1 million plus three players: Tonel, Evaldo, and Antonielton Ferreira. A clause in the agreement also stated that Marítimo would receive 20% of any future transfer fee. During his time in Porto, Pepe played 64 competitive games in the Portuguese league, cup, and European competition and also scored six goals for the team.
On 16 July 2007, Real Madrid signed Pepe from Porto. He signed a five-year contract with the Spanish champions, for a fee of €30 million.[1] On 8 November, Pepe and teammate Javier Balboa got into a fight during a training session.[2] Pepe would be nonetheless called-up for Real Madrid's next match, whereas the winger was not. Pepe's best performance of the season was in the 1-0 away win at the Camp Nou against FC Barcelona when he almost single-handedly stopped all Barca's attacks. At the end of the match Spanish sports daily Diario AS gave Pepe a player rating of 4/4, while Goal.com have given him 9 stars out of 10.[3]
Throughout the 2008-09 season, Pepe's season was marred by a red card against Getafe CF on 21 April 2009. With the score at 2-2 and with only a few minutes left to play, Javier Casquero went down in the penalty area. Pepe then proceeded to kick the fallen opponent twice: once on his shin and once on his lower back. Pepe was given a 10-game ban.
During 2009-2010 season, he returned to claim his place back in the starting line-up and his first goal in La Liga for Los Merengues came against Sevilla FC on 4th October 2009 at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, a header from a Guti free-kick which Real Madrid lost 2-1. On December 13th 2009, it was confirmed that Pepe may be out for six months after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge in a match against Valencia and was stretchered off the pitch in tears and with his head in his hands. Scans later showed that he ruptured his right knee's anterior cruciate ligament. The Portuguese had an operation to repair the damaged ligament in order to allow time for the swelling to go down. The injury forced the defender out of the rest of the club season, but his hopes for playing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa were alive as he competed in the group game versus Brazil and then in the second round defeat to Spain.
Pepe has never represented his native Brazil in any youth category. He received Portuguese citizenship in August 2007 and, on 30 August, was named in the Portuguese squad for the first time, in view of a Euro 2008 qualifier against Poland.[4] An injury while training for his club prevented the debut for his adopted country, which would materialize almost four months later, in Portugal's last qualifier against Finland (0-0 home draw) on 21 November.
In the tournament's final stages, Pepe played in all of the national side's matches, scoring once in a 2-0 win against Turkey on 7 June 2008.[5]
During the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Pepe was often used as a defensive midfielder, by national coach Carlos Queiroz.
