History

The club was founded in 1973 and re-established in 1996. The name BATE is the acronym of the Borisov Works of Automobile and Tractor Electronic Equipment. Since 1996 FC BATE have won five national championships and competed in UEFA competitions against the likes of AC Milan, Juventus, Bologna, 1860 Munich and Real Madrid.

Notable former players include Alexander Hleb (VfB Stuttgart, Arsenal, F.C. Barcelona), Vitali Kutuzov (AC Milan, Sporting, Avellino, Sampdoria, Parma, Pisa) and Yuri Zhevnov (FC Moscow). Having started their professional careers with FC BATE, all are also now members of the Belarus national team.

Of the current squad, Vitali Rodionov and Sergey Veremko also play for the national team.

2008 saw FC BATE become the first Belarusian football team in history to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. Not only can FC BATE gain 3 goals in 5 matches, the Belarusian Club can also gain 2 points in 5 matches. Currently in 4th place of UEFA Champions League 2008-09 Group H, BATE lost chances to advance to the Champions League playoff or even to the UEFA Cup Round of 32. Nevertheless, the club won much of international praise and respect for its stubborness, discipline, fearlessness, and attacking style against some of Europe's best teams. In the three qualification rounds they beat Icelandic champions Valur 3-0 on aggregate before disposing of Champions League regulars RSC Anderlecht (4-3) and then Bulgarian side Levski Sofia (2-1). Their only previous appearance beyond the qualification stages in European football was in 2001 when they reached the first round of the UEFA Cup.
