Zvi Elpeleg was Israel's ambassador to Turkey from 1995 to 1997.[1] He was the military governor of Gaza,[2] and was Israel's first military governor of the West Bank.[3] He later entered academia, becoming an Arabist at the Dayan Institute.[3] He authored a biography of Mohammad Amin al-Husayni.[4]

[edit] Mufti's biography

According to Eric Rouleau, specialist of the Middle-East and former ambassador of France in Tunisia and Turkey[5], the work of Elpeleg as well as the biography published at the same period by Palestinian historian Philip Matar are, in his own quotes, «objective ». Elpeleg « rehabilitates [the Mufti] in pointing out the services he gave to the Palestinian cause » and pictures the Mufti « in the years 20 and 30 as the first of the anti-imperialist of the area because he fought (...) Great-Britain, Mandatory power and lead the (...) 1936-1936 uprising whose main purpose was to gain the independence of Palestinian people. ». For Elpeleg, « Haj Amin is a man "out-of-norm", comparable to Chaim Weizmann, David Ben Gurion or even Theodor Herzl. » Eric Rouleau concludes in stating that : « Former military governor at Gaza and in Cisjordan, who were formerly considered as a "hawk", Zvi Elpeleg testifies the evolution of minds in Israel where his book received the best welcome in media ».[6]
