Zubeidaa (Hindi: ज़ुबैदा, Urdu: زبیدہ) is a 2001 film directed by Shyam Benegal and written by Khalid Mohammed. Zubeidaa stars Karisma Kapoor, Rekha, Manoj Bajpai, Surekha Sikri, Rajat Kapoor, Lillete Dubey, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal and Shakti Kapoor.

It is the concluding chapter in a trilogy that began with Mammo (1994) and continued with Sardari Begum (1996).

The film is based on the life on an ill-fated actress, the mother of film critic, Khalid Mohammed, who also wrote film's screenplay [1].

The film garnered the citation, National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and won Karishma Kapoor a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics').

Zubeidaa is the story of a young man’s search to understand his mother who is not known to him. Zubeidaa (Karisma Kapoor) is the only daughter of a filmmaker Suleman Seth (Amrish Puri). Zubeidaa acts in films secretly but when her father finds out he forbids her to carry on and quickly arranges her marriage to Mehboob Alam. Things look happy for her when she gives birth to a son, Riyaz. However due to a misunderstanding between her in-laws and her father, Mehboob divorces Zubeidaa.

She meets Maharaja Vijayendra Singh (Manoj Bajpai). He is attracted to Zubeidaa and proposes to her, she's hesitant at first but she soon relents and accepts his proposal. She leaves her son to her mother's care and goes to Fatehpur as his second wife. She meets the Maharaja's first wife Maharani Mandira Devi (Rekha) and at first is happy with her surroundings and her new life. However she feels isolated by her husband and soon jealousy sets in when Vijayendra chooses Mandira Devi to accompany him during the election campaign... She starts going against the norms of a Maharani and in the end she and Maharaja Vijayendra Singh die in a plane crash
