[edit] Status

You are, of course, quite right, we owe this place nothing and we've both added a good deal of useful stuff. At the moment, I'm just checking my watchlist and working away on The Cantos ans List of cultural references in The Cantos. These last two mean doing a lot of reading, which I'm enjoying. And I may well lean back still more over the coming months. Keep well. Filiocht 16:08, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

Good work on that. I do actually have a number of subjects I wish to expand on further myself on Wikipedia - if only I had time. I've found a quite interesting history to Irish road signage, as revealed by our fantastic online statute book [1]. It's a remarkable piecemeal mess successive governments made of it - with little amendments to the 50s road traffic act mounting up over the decades until their consolidation in a single road traffic act in the 90s. Plus there's the interesting continual extension of an amnesty on pre-50s signage (the original legislation was amended repeatedly at least half a dozen times to change the withdrawal date for old signs). Quite a different subject area to your own, I know!
Annoyingly though I can't find details on the introduction of the modern British-style directional signage (with the green/blue/white backgrounds, panels and metric distances).
zoney talk 17:01, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
And, of course, the switch to metric coming up. I wonder if the switch you mention has anything to do with the EU? Filiocht 08:23, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Honorifics and titles

I have posted a proposal on honorifics in my user space that I would like you to read: User:Ford/proposals. I saw your comments on Talk:December 2004 in Britain and Ireland and was hopeful that you might be supportive. Thanks.

[edit] Editing the EU map

You've accused me on my talk page of editing the EU map. I did no such thing, and I don't understand why you've added the comment. Jonathan Grynspan 23:06, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] quick question

Hi...I am trying to help a friend out and thought you might have the answers (I went to the back of the Alphabet as I know the Z's often got picked last in grade school).

Anyway, my friend posted some edits on a listing and now the original lister has gotten their IP address and is mocking them. I was wondering if her changes can be deleted so that the mocker (if that's a word) can no longer view the ip address and/or make reference to her original postings.

No need to delete the whole category...just the changes she made.

Basically, she made them from her work computer and she is nervous that she's going to get in trouble for doing it. Not to mention she's a little embarassed.

Any help you can give is appreciated.

Thanks

If you could let me know the relevant articles, I can have a look at what's going on (you can email if you like rather than post here). Certainly the "mocker" should be stopped - personal attacks are not acceptable on Wikipedia. But unfortunately the history of your friend's edits cannot be removed (although the current version of the article can be amended). zoney talk 10:58, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Derry City Council

Is there a reason you have split Derry City Council from Derry? It rather spoils one of the justifications for titling the main article Derry. I am not sure User:Ardfern's good work carrying this across Northern Ireland is a positive step forward. --Henrygb 18:02, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Neither am I sure about the actions, but I split some myself (such as Derry) for the sake of consistency - it was either that or ignore the situation and allow town articles to be renamed after the councils (Ardfern was not originally splitting the articles - but simply moving them). Plus I do hate those ugly tables. zoney talk 11:39, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] N1 and the Boyne River Bridge

Hey Zoney, I see that you added the Boyne River Bridge picture to the N1 road article, their is just one problem, the M1 is the only road that goes over the bridge, the N1 goes threw Drogheda, and crosses the river in town. --User:Boothy443 | comhrÚ 16:58, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Actually, the N1 doesn't go through Drogheda anymore (although road signs are not necessarily updated). When sections of N routes are upgraded/bypassed by motorway, the original route is re-designated as an R route (regional route). This is unlike British practice where their A routes continue to exist even when a new M route is built nearby.
I have been working on the premise of treating the Nx road articles as describing the total route - including sections designated M. Perhaps moving the articles to Nx route would be better.
zoney talk 09:50, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Interestingly, the British practice (when an A road is completely re-routed) is to downgrade the old route to a B-road (roughly = an Irish R road). France keeps the N route even after the A(autoroute) is created - and truckies keep using it to avoid the tolls!
This applies to re-routing A routes (keeping the Axx classification for the new road). I believe in all cases, when motorway routes are added (Mxx) the corresponding Axx route is not downgraded. I could be wrong, but this was my understanding.
An interesting note on the Irish roads is that even the M50 (entirely new motorway route) was legislated as the N50 (there is no section of the road which uses this "on the ground"). All national routes are *legally* part of an N-route - even if using an Mxx classification (due to being motorway).
Of course, some Irish N-routes theoretically include roads in Northern Ireland (e.g. N3 road enters NI and emerges again near Ballyshannon). This can be seen in the corresponding legislation (so for example, the N2 not only connects Dublin to Cavan, but is a national route from Dublin to Derry). zoney talk 17:05, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] M1 motorway

Bad, bad, bad to go and make such a major change without proper discussion. Please see Talk:M1 motorway for my pov, but I believe this will need to be reverted. --Vamp:Willow 13:42, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Donnybrook

No problem, I'll keep that in mind in future. --Demiurge 18:24, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] regional technical colleges

In ***strict*** legal terms "institutes of technology" are still "regional technical colleges" though referred to by the former in everyday usage and by title. Djegan 19:10, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm... I wasn't aware of this. Yet the term RTC is for all common intents and purposes deprecated. I would have thought IT the better term to introduce on the articles I edited - it more reflects current usage (and beyond that, even used in their titles).
As regards the technical side of things - well, the article is at Regional Technical College, which is probably more proper. But I think other references that don't go into detail as to the status of the names should be to ITs.
zoney talk 21:14, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Your points noted and accepted - just making the point so that if anyone were to move articles without legislative changes I am already on the record for this. Djegan 21:21, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Irish TV station audience shares

Hello Zoney, I work in the industry so I have the software to run the Nielsen Media Reasearch figures. I have updated RTÉ Two and TG4 figures, I can look up UTV, C4, Sky One... &c. I'll add them if appropriate but it might be next week before I get to that. I can access UK share figures too but I'm not that familiar with that software so I'd be hesitant to stand over those figures. -- Lochaber 16:26, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Had a look at UTV share in ROI. It is at 5.8% for Jan '05. Its ROI shares have been low and falling lately, the theory is this is because UTV (and Channel 4) are not carried on Sky Digital. I don't know if it was ever ahead of RTÉ Two to be honest with you, I had a look at Jan to Dec shares by year (I can only go back to 1998 with this software - which obviously isn't that far back) and it's always been behind for the whole year average. I thought I should mention the shares I have posted are for Individuals National as this is the widest demographic.
Due to the fact that the UTV entry isn't a TV station article I'm going to have to work the share into the text, I didn't have time today, should be updating tomorrow. -- Lochaber 17:56, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Irish towname formatting

Thanks for telling me the format of Irish townnames, I'll keep it in mind.

[edit] CfD: Category:Motor vehicle manufactuers of FOO.

On WP:CfD re carmakers. I am now leaning towards changing everything to Category:Motor vehicle manufactuers of FOO. Motor vheciles is definitely allowable in US english, given the large number of "department of motor vehicles" at state level, e.g., California (http://www.dmv.ca.gov), New York (http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us). What do you think? JuntungWu 09:52, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rosslare Europort / Harbour

Hi, Zoney. Just in case you don't spot it, I've posted a proposal at Talk:Rosslare_Europort which you might like to comment on. Grma -- Picapica 11:54, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Thanks for adding the fact about the sabertooth fish to the template! But would you mind including some of the suggestions from the talk page as well, next time you do an update? There were a number of them waiting to be featured. - Mgm|(talk) 14:14, Feb 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Past tense in Selected Anniversary

Now that Selected Anniversaries are locked down, I cannot edit them as I have in the past. The Dresden entry should have been in past tense, per the guidelines. Thank you, Ancheta Wis 12:15, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Actually, the bombers didn't reach Dresden till after midnight, i.e. the 14th and not the 13th. Don't worry about the tense. This event will be featured tomorrow. -- PFHLai 14:54, 2005 Feb 13 (UTC)

[edit] Please can you help me.

I wanted to know all of the most commonly used Wiki tags. So far I only know how to link stuff and make headings.

[edit] National Gallery of Ireland

Hey, can I ask your advice, I have been doing some work on the National Gallery of Ireland and want to add some pictures, getting a picture of the gallery itself is just a matter of remembering to bring my camera to work, the question is about getting an image of one of the pictures, the Italian Vermeer article on the NGI's Vermeer actually has an image

The NGI Vermeer on it.wikipedia.org

but I have no feeling about whether this is fair use or whatever.

Thanks a mill. Notjim 15:44, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Western Railway Corridor

Congrats on Western Railway Corridor - featured in the Did You Know section on the Main Page already! CGorman 23:09, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

More to come... Great Southern & Western Railway should have had an article long ago. I've books with the exact history of the GW&SR but haven't time to research it all and put it together. So I've created a basic article for now. zoney talk 11:20, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
May I add my congrats too on both articles. Saw the WRC article on the Main Page today. Should have taken more of an interest in the GW&SR before now: I had two grandparents worked for the GW&S/Great Southern/CIÉ. Alas I haven't got the books though! -- Picapica 21:46, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dresden

I understand. It's alright. When I first saw the news on the 'Net about the celebrations, I thought I had screwed up something, too. I do make mistakes more often than I want, you know....  :-) -- PFHLai 09:54, 2005 Feb 14 (UTC)

Celebrations - I know the Allies were happy to win and all, but I think the word you're looking for is "commemorations" ;-) zoney talk 10:00, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You are absolutely right, Zoney. "Commemorations", that is. :-) -- PFHLai 10:10, 2005 Feb 14 (UTC)

[edit] Western railway

I was living in Ennis when the debate about re-opening the rail line started. At the time I was a regular visitor to the beaches to the west and remember a rail line running into Lahinch and paralleling the coast southwards down to Kilkee at least. I also recall a poster in one of the Ennis pubs about daytrips to the beaches on the railway.

At the time I thought this WAS the western corridor that they wanted to open. But reading over your article, and looking at the map, I see that's not the case. So what was that second line?

Maury 13:10, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

PS. I have to disagree with one thing, the only reason to go to Bunratty is it's the last good pub before hitting the airport.

See West Clare Railway. Full reply at User talk:Maury Markowitz. zoney talk 13:23, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the note! Maury 13:24, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Traditional counties box

I am not so impressed at you having reverted what I did and the reason is laid out in my talk page in simple terms - ***strictly*** speaking the "new counties" of Dublin and Tipperary have similar status to the traditional counties in an adminstrative and lawful sense. Give me one one good reason why I should not revert what you did, why not simplyfy and admitt - its not like they were in the main body of the table! Djegan

[edit] wiki-stress: angry

Any reason why you're on angry mode? The angryface you did looks kinda cool BTW. Kiand 01:45, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Too much time spent on WikiEN while staying up too late :-) Thanks for asking! zoney talk 14:48, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] That Leitrim map again... (the Rooskies are coming)

I thought, as a fellow wrestler with the Roosky Question, you might enjoy this site. -- Picapica 16:40, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I was aiming in County Leitrim to include a reference to Shanraw (on the south side of Sheebeg. Hence my recent use of settlement centre. I have used the same expression for similar reasons in Caithness. Shanraw has a townland mains but this isnt very recognisable as a town or village Laurel Bush 16:03, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC).

Simply introduce it as a townland. "Settlement centres" sounds like historical remnants of the plantations or a modern spatial planning move or something!!! There's no reference to Shanraw as yet I notice. Is it particularly notable to be included?

Sheebeg and Sheemore seem well worth a mention, and Shanraw is also a nice curiousity. Not yet seeing much real geography in Leitrim. Laurel Bush 17:05, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC).
