Zombie Gutz was a five-piece Hardcore/Metalcore band from the Foothills region of North Carolina that existed from 2004 to 2007.

[edit] Development
Zombie Gutz was formed from parts of two previous Hardcore bands (Four Have Fallen and Tomorrow Can Wait) in late 2004. Both bands developed friendships from playing small local shows in the Foothill areas. Tomorrow Can Wait was based out of Wilkesboro, North Carolina and Four Have Fallen was based out of Taylorsville, North Carolina. Former vocalist Chase Brent and guitarist Vanlen Lowe from Tomorrow Can Wait joined Zombie Gutz as well as Four Have Fallen's guitarist Ryan Conrad and Brandon Davidson along with drummer Ryan Hefner. Ryan Conrad (lead guitar) joined with close friend Ryan Hefner (drummer) to work on a new project in early 2004. The material was mainly focused on writing heavy Hardcore Metal. Very shortly Brandon Davidson joined as the official rhythm guitarist. Ryan Conrad made one call to Chase Brent (vocalist) to ask him and Van Lowe (bassist) to join the new band. The band as a whole wrote two songs, "Water Hockey" and "Track 7", at their first practice. Both songs ended up being their biggest hits. In the middle of the first practice, the band went to Bojangles', which became a band practice tradition for three years. The band collectively agreed that this band would be strictly for fun. Example: One song, "Water Hockey", lyrics are strictly about a squirrel being smashed by an Eighteen Wheeler. The name, Zombie Gutz, was also a joke for their first show and ended up sticking for its "attention" drawing curiosity.
[edit] First Album: Self-Titled
The band's first album was written in late 2005 in response to such a positive response from the Charlotte, North Carolina fans which quickly became Zombie Gutz real home away from home. The album was recorded in Bethlehem, North Carolina at Figure Studios in the basement of Ryan Conrad's house. Figure Studios was converted into a studio/practice room around 2002. Zombie Gutz "Self-Titled" album took about five weeks to record and became a hit including tracks: "Wilkesboro","Track 7", and "Keep Poundin'". The band held their CD release party shortly after at Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte, North Carolina.
[edit] Second Album (and last): Who's Come'n With Me
The band's second album was written in January of 2005. Very shortly after signing to an Indiana-based record label, Wounded Records, Zombie Gutz agreed by contract to record one album including seven songs from the Self-Titled album and four brand new songs. The band also agreed to play at Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illinois in summer of 2005. The tracking of the "Who's Come'n With Me?" album took place again at Figure Studios. The album took about three months to write and about a month to mail off a master copy to Wounded Records to be mastered and duplicated. Zombie Gutz was Wounded's bread winner and was well advertised. The CD release party was also held at Tremont Music Hall on the main stage. It became their biggest turnout, aside from Cornerstone Festival, with around 500+ people.
Track List:
- 1. Moonpies and Brownie Chocolate
- 2. Wilkesboro
- 3. Bo Fever
- 4. How Does It Go?
- 5. Burned Alive
- 6. Sold
- 7. Wacko Jacko
- 8. Track 7
- 9. Keep Poundin'
- 10. Dumpzilla
- 11. Alexander
- 12. Water Hockey
[edit] Member Changes
The band's first big loss was from Van Lowe who was enrolled in the National Guard. In 2005, Van was deported to Iraq for one year. This took place very shortly before the band signed to Wounded Records. The first to replace Van was Joe Elmore from UNCC. He covered for the band on bass for several shows in the Spring of 2005. Richard Kelly, also from UNCC, also also filled in several shows as well as Cornerstone Festival. After Cornerstone, Brandon Davidson also left the band so he could get married and start his career. At this point in time, Zombie Gutz needed to tour heavily to promote their music. This caused many problems in the band. Ryan Hefner was graduating from UNCC and had to start his career which gave him no time to go on the road. Original members Chase Brent and Ryan Conrad were the only ones who could tour. Around this time Van arrived back from Iraq and filled in on guitar and good friend Evan Kirkley, who played in Cambridge(a southern metal band from Lancaster, South Carolina) filled in on drums. Luke Williams from The Fire The Flood, Rock Hill, South Carolina booked the band's first tour and Josh Moree, who was also an ex-member of Cambridge, filled in on bass for the tour. For hometown shows in 2006, Chris Nolen, ex-member of Tomorrow Can Wait, filled in on bass as well.
[edit] Breaking Up-2007
After the tours, the members and fill-ins were starting to realize how much tour had taken a toll on their wallets. Most of them were concerned if they were even going to be able to pay the next month's rent. At this point, the band (Chase, Conrad, Evan, Van, and Chris) had hit rock bottom. All the hardships that the band had gone through and losing members had finally worn them down. The band in 04' that just played for fun had fell in to the "all serious" trap. From then on, the only members that had aspirations to carry on Zombie Gutz and tour was Chase and Conrad. The rest either made plans to go get a degree, or just play in a part-time band. Shortly after disbanding, all the original members decided to play one last show at Tremont Music Hall with the original members. Everyone agreed, and it was held on June 8, 2007 as "Last Show Ever". The band went out in a blaze of glory as the power was turned off during the last performance of Wilkesboro with over 100 people on the stage singing at the top of their lungs.

- Zombie Gutz's first show was held at The Milestone in Charlotte, NC on January 3, 2005. They showed up in place of another band "Until My Heart's Content" and led the venue owner to believe that they were them. The whole show they referred to themselves as Until My Heart's Content until the end of the show. Three days later, they showed up at the same venue and played as Zombie Gutz.
- Every show Zombie Gutz would start and end the set with "Wilkesboro".
- Zombie Gutz went through 3 tour vans and only went on 2 "claimable" tours.
- Traditionally, Zombie Gutz ate at Bojangles' in Bethlehem, North Carolina between or after every single practice for three years. The song "Bo Fever" was titled mainly for that reason.
- The song "Wilkesboro" was never released, but it was filmed in a hay barn. The guitarists plugged their cords into hay bails as amps. Drummer, Ryan Hefner, poured rubbing alcohol on his cymbals and lit them on fire. The flame caught a small portion of hay on fire that was stomped out quickly. Small portions of this video filmed the band eating Bojangles' at a picnic. Song "Keep Poundin'" was derived from the Panthers wristbands sold at Bojangles' as well. This term was supposedly a "sexual innuendo" and an inside joke between the members.
- Song "Water Hockey" lyrics was about a squirrel being squashed by an eighteen wheeler.
-Zombie Gutz held three annual Halloween shows at Tremont Music Hall and invited everyone to dress up. One year their faces were painted like zombies by make-up artist Jenn Small, who also did make-up for the "Alexander" music video. Zombie Gutz wore green warm-up suits that said GUTZ on the front for the Halloween Bash.
- "Wilkesboro" was actually written in a previous band several years before Zombie Gutz started. Members Ryan Hefner, Josh Ray, Chris Nolen, Ryan Conrad, and vocalist Cody played one show which included "Wilkesboro", in front of about 50 people at a small venue in Statesville, North Carolina known as The Upper Room.
- Zombie Gutz has shared the stage with bands such as Bury Your Dead, Hatebreed, A Stained Glass Romance, Cambridge, My Hero Is Me, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, The Damascus Intervention, IcedxOut, The Fire The Flood, Meaner, Think Back, and many more. At Cornerstone Festival, they played at the same festival that As I Lay Dying, UnderOath, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, The Chariot, Norma Jean, Premonitions of War, Zao, The Showdown, P.O.D., Seventh Star, and many others played at.
- Robby Brason (Zombie Gutz merch guy) and Leah Gerrard played as actors in the "Alexander" video.
- Zombie Gutz played under the name "The Ryan Conrad Experience" for about 2 weeks.
- A 4 song demo, including "Springfield Armory", "How Does It Go?", "Water Hockey", and "Wilkesboro", was recorded and handed out at the first shows the band played. This demo is extremely rare, because only 100 copies were ever made.
- The da-do-da-do part in "Wilkesboro" was initially written to help the band members remember the part.
- The first Zombie Gutz t-shirt was a green eighteen wheeler with the words "Zombie Gutz" written all over it. This shirt is also very rare, because it was never reprinted after the initial printing.
- "Wilkesboro" was originally titled "Before There Was Wilkesboro, There Was Sodom and Gomorrah", but it was shortened to just "Wilkesboro"
[edit] Zombie Gutz (2008-Present)
Although Zombie Gutz is inactive, they released one song titled, "Meet You On the Road Jack", in May of 2008. This song was written and recorded by Ryan Conrad and Evan Kirkley and the lyrics were written and recorded by Chase Brent. This song was written for a compilation that Pride Aside put together called "Mick's Tape". This compilation is still being worked on. On the Zombie Gutz Myspace, they also announced in May that they were working on a new band called "Club The Beaver" and 4 new songs will be released in late summer of 2008. It's to everyone's understanding that Chase Brent, Ryan Conrad, and Ryan Hefner are involved in it.
