Moreh remains paralysed for second day
MOREH, Jul 18 (Zoland News Network: Normal life in the border town of Moreh in the Indian side with the Burma counterparts remained disrupted for the second day today as the people here continued their agitations against the assault on innocent civilians by the Assam Rifles yesterday.
Today the people, mostly womenfolk, staged protests in front of the Moreh police station demanding unconditional release of five youths who were handed over by the Assam Rifles to the police station.
A team of MLAs is likely to leave Imphal for Moreh to look into the developing situation in the town. Reliable sources said the team may leave tomorrow and hold talks with the agitating people to bring an amicable solution.
A police IG has also reportedly left Imphal for Moreh to take stock of the situation.
The trade across the border and movement of all kinds of vehicles were still paralysed as the indefinite bandh imposed by the womenfolk of the area is still going on.
The town remained deserted as no vehicles were seen on the roads and all shops and other establishments remained shut.
Restrictions have also been imposed under section 144 of CrPC in all the government offices located at Moreh by an order of the executive magistrate, Moreh ADC apart from the camping of the DC and SP, Chandel district at Moreh to deal with any untoward incidents in the area.
The womenfolk of the All Moreh Apuna Meira Paibi staged a sit-in protest in front of the police station demanding the release of the youths apprehended by the AR and handed over to the police, claiming that no grenade or any kind of illegal materials were seized at the time of their arrest.
In the prevailing circumstances, the Moreh police could not transport the five arrested men to the state capital for the day.
In the meantime, another person who suffered injury in the AR assault identified as Mahindra Singh Batra, 20, has been referred to a hospital at Imphal as his condition became serious.
