[edit] Story
Koko was a warm-hearted person and Sherry Bellmont's best friend when she was young. Though Koko grew up in poverty and lived on the streets and Sherry grew up in a world of privilege, they vowed that some day they would both find happiness in life. As they grew older, though, both Koko and Sherry continued to live separate lives, but remained friends. When Koko was finally accepted at a college, a mysterious mamodo named Zofis showed up and offered to help her get revenge on the city that she suffered in. The once-kind Koko unwittingly teamed up with Zofis who used his magic and powers to manipulate and control Koko's mind and transform her once warm heart into a cold one. Zofis made Koko burned down her own city, killing all the people who abused her and believe that she must help him find and destroy Sherry. Sherry's main purpose now is to find Koko and defeat Zofis, so Koko can be released from Zofis' mind control powers and turn back into the friend that Sherry once knew.
When Zofis tries to get Zatch Bell and Kiyo Takamine (Gash Bell and Kiyomaro Takamine) to join him, he wears a mask and calls himself Milordo-Z (simply Lord in Japanese). He also shows that he can control other people with his powers when he controls Suzy to talk to Kiyo. He used brainwashed people to have them control three Ancient Mamodo he recently freed.
He recruits Byonko, Penny and their partners to their side and Zofis released more Ancient Mamodo to wipe out all the present mamodo so that he would become king.
Zofis used the magic of the Moonlight Stone to control the Ancient Mamodo with fear. The Stone had the power to control minds and create illusions, and through it he convinced the mamodo that they could be turned to stone if they defied him. In truth, this was impossible, but the illusion was so powerful that the ancient mamodo decided to obey him rather than face the possibility of returning to stone.
His mask bore a piece of the Moonlight Stone, which could be used to create a shield that could block all attacks.
In the end, however, Zofis was nothing but a coward who flaunted his own power and trembled when he was approached by someone stronger. After his army was defeated and he had lost everything, he taunted Sherry saying that Koko would retain her memory of what she did, the resulting guilt eventually driving her insane. However, Brago revealed that when he protected Sherry from Zofis's attack when Sherry first met Zofis and Brago, Zofis pretended he didn't sense him as he was terrified of Brago. After Brago asked Zofis if he wanted to live in a world where he was always running from him, Zofis finally gave up due to his fear of that prospect, even apologizing for his acts. His book was later burned after he erased Koko's memories of what happened.
Zofis' gender was originally questioned, with early translations varying between "she" and "he."[citation needed] The reason for this gender confusion is that the Japanese language does not have specific pronouns related to gender. The English manga also tends to switch between "he" and "she", possibly showing that there have been some translation problems. In a recent interview, Makoto Raiku has confirmed that Zofis was always intended to be male. In the English dub of Zatch Bell!, Zofis is referred to as a male.
In the original Japanese version, Koko is played by Chinami Nishimura while Zofis is played by Toshiko Fujita. In the Viz Media English dub, Koko is played by Lara Jill Miller while Zofis is played by Susan Silo.
