Zlarin is a small and extremely beautiful island of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia near the city of Šibenik. Administratively, it is part of the Šibenik-Knin County. In winter times entire island has an population of 276 people, but from March to October its population grows substantially up to 1500 souls. Zlarin has large expatriot community and it is to be said that there is Zlarinjanins(Croatian word for inhabitants of Zlarin), dead or alive, on every continent on the planet Earth, including Antarctica.

Zlarin has myriad fig and Cyprus trees, and other natural plants. Inner parts of the island are unhabited and covered in thick forest. That thick forest and Adriatic sea air, combined, produce the best quality air in Mediterranean sea.

It's interesting to say that Zlarin is one of few islands of the Adriatic sea not to allow access for cars. Ecologically friendly environment.

[edit] Regattas

Each year Yacht club Zlarin organizes three boat regattas.

Annual "Zlarinska regata krstaša" , "Latinskin idrun na kureja" regatta and New Year "Zlarinska regata krstaša".

In 2008. 6th of the Zlarinska regata krstaša is scheduled on 19.04. - 20.04.2008. OPEN class. Since 2004. yacht club Zlarin organizes New Year "Zlarinska regata krstaša" on 31st December each year.

While "Zlarinska regata krstaša" is sporting event, Latinskin idrun na kureja regatta is interesting one. This regatta is reserved for wooden boat built on old, exclusively hand-made traditional way and propelled by so called Latin sail (mainsail, triangular sail).

Zlarin's forefathers used those boats and techniques for centuries. Latin sail is extensively used when sailing against the wind. In harsh winter times you had to be very skilled and courageous to navigate such boats in very unfriendly environment just to bring handful of fish to your family at home. This regatta is omage to them and their courage.

Every year natives of Zlarin flock from all over the world, to get together on a hot and sunny July day to recreate a part of their ancestors life. They forget about mighty engines that they have on deck, young and old, cousins and friends, side by side, are waiting anxiously for the starting shot. Everything calms down, you can hear wind in your ears, your eyes are full of Sun, boats are gently whispering to the sea and in that moment you can see how things were on this island 500 years ago. Shot rings out cascading to the sea, men get their ropes, they get the sails up, wind is blowing the sails and spectacular scene is raveling in front of your eyes. Fifty, sixty sails are covering horizon and they go... and for the full four hours they will battle the Adriatic sea just as they do for centuries.
