[edit] Definitions
- bracket salvo
- A salvo technique that uses the fire from multiple guns to assist with obtaining an accurate target range. The basic technique involved the fire from three guns: One gun fired at the estimated target range, another fired at 400 meters longer range, and the other fired at 400 meters shorter range. The range estimate to the target can be estimated by observing which shells landed closest to the target.
- ladder salvo
- Also called a ranging salvo. A salvo technique that uses the fire from multiple guns to assist with obtaining an accurate target range. A typical firing pattern would involve three shells fired 200 meters longer than the range estimate, one group fired 200 meters short of the target, and one group fired 400 meters short. Knowing the position of the shell impact then allows a more accurate target range to be obtained.
