Zia is the sequel to the award-winning Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. It was published in 1976, fifteen years after the publication of the first novel.
Zia is the 14 year-old niece of Karana, the Indian woman left behind on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Zia believes her aunt is alive, and with the help of her younger brother Mando, she sets out on an eighteen foot boat for a sixty mile journey to rescue Karana. The first time they tried, they got pulled back by a pez espada. The second time was because of a whaling ship.
Captain Nidever goes to to the Island of the Blue Dolphins to hunt otters. He brings Father Vicente with him to find Karana. Meanwhile StoneHands and other children escape and StoneHands gave Zia the key to the girls room. Captain Cordova puts Zia in prison.
Captain Nidever finally returns with Karana and Rontu Aru. Captain Nidever and Father Vicente argue, and finally free Zia out of prison. Zia and Karana can't communicate. Karana sleeps in the courtyard with Rontu Aru.
Father Merceed gets really sick and dies. Father Vicente takes over. He lets the people sell their things that they made and lets them keep the money. Father Vicente went to Monteray Bay. Father Malatesta filled the place of Father Vicente. Stonehands, Karana and other people do not like Father Malatesta, so they run away.
Zia finds Karana in the same cave she and Mando hid the Boston boy. A few days later, Karana dies.
Zia decides to go back to her hometown, Pala.
