Zhirnovsk

Zhirnovsk (Russian: Жирновск) is a town in Volgograd Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Medveditsa River, 320 km north of Volgograd. It is the administrative center of Zhirnovsky District. Population: 17,751 (2002 Census); 16,792 (1989 Census).
Until 1954, it was known as the village (selo) of Zhirnoye (Жи́рное). In 1954, it was granted status of urban-type settlement and in 1958—town status.
