Zhenotdel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexandra Kollontai and fellow feminist revolutionary Inessa Armand in 1919 together established the Zhenotdel (Женотдел), the first government department for women in the world.
This organization worked to improve the conditions of women's lives in the Soviet Union, fighting illiteracy and educating women about the new marriage, education, and working laws put in place by the Revolution.
Zhenotdel was shut down in 1930, in accordance with the then dominant theory that all women's issues had been "solved."
