[edit] Character History
Zhao Ling'er is the daughter of the Chief Priestess of White Miao and the King of Black Miao, and hence the true heir of the Kingdom of Nanzhao. As a descendant of Nüwa, her true form is half girl, half serpent. She also possesses the supernatural power inherited from her bloodline.
She met Li Xiaoyao on her island of refuge when he came to acquire a medicine that would cure his aunt of a severe illness. Touched by his love for his aunt, she gave him the medicine but her protective grandmother found out that a mortal discovered their location, forced Li to marry Ling'Er.
Through subsequent developments, Ling'Er recovered her slain mother's magical staff and resumed the role of the savior of the Miao people, as her mother was the benevolent queen. She sacrificed her life to bring the flood under control, and putting an end to the reign of the devious leader of the Cult of the Moon Worshipers, who set up the queen's ultimate death.
[edit] Relationships
When Li went to the island that she lives in, Li was made to marry her on the day when he visited. She loves Li Xiaoyao very much, but knowing her fate, she quietly and unselfishly leaves Xiaoyao in order to save her people. Ling'Er and Xiaoyao has a daughter, Li Yiru.
[edit] Critiques
Her fate is to end in tragedy. She was an innocent 'girl-next-door' type, but her destiny was to be much greater than living in a paradise-like setting on her island of exile. She matured to become a mother and a savior to her people from the evil that threatened to devour the whole of China. Similarly, in Chinese mythology, Nüwa is sometimes credited as a creator goddess who sacrificed herself to stop the flood and saved mankind.
In the sequel The Legend of Sword and Fairy 2, a mysterious female voice came from the sky to summon the power of Nüwa, and saved the young heroes against the final evil villain. The voice is believed to be the divine spirit of Zhao Ling'er, as only Nüwa's descendants is able to summon such power, and Wang Xiaohu is able to recognize the voice (he is the only one there who had ever met Zhao).
