Zhang competed for the Chinese in badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics in mixed double's with partner Gao Ling, to defend the title they won at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. They had a bye in the first round and defeated Tsai Chia-Hsin and Cheng Wen-Hsing of Chinese Taipei in the second. In the quarterfinals, Zhang and Gao beat Frederik Bergstrom and Johanna Persson of Sweden 15-3, 15-1 to advance to the semifinals. There, they defeated Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager of Denmark 15-9, 15-5. In the final, the defending champions defeated British pair Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms 15-1, 12-15, 15-12 to win the gold medal.
