Zfylud (Mecha)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zfylud is a fictional robot in the Super Robot Wars series. It has appeared as an enemy unit in Shin Super Robot Wars, Super Robot Wars Alpha, Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 and the Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation series. Due to the protean nature of the mecha, it has appeared in three distinct aspects in the franchise.

[edit] Zfylud (Humanoid)

The first Zfylud appeared in Shin Super Robot Wars and Super Robot Wars Alpha. In both games, it was the personal mount of Laodicea Judecca Gozzo, commandant of the Seventh Ze Balmary Imperial Inspection Fleet, otherwise known as the Aerogaters.

[edit] Appearance

The humanoid Zfylud is colored deeply in purple and appears to be made entirely of crystals. It has a pair of orange-tinted winglike projections. Its only handheld weapon is a crystalline sword, and its face is said to be fashioned in the likeness of the Balmarian god, Zfylud. Many Super Robot Wars players have commented that it appears to be sticking out its tongue.

[edit] Technical And Historical

The Zfylud was designed as the nucleus of the fleet's colossal Hermóðr-class warships. It serves as the power source and main computer of the entire ship. The unit itself is only used in dire circumstances, such as the destruction of the flagship, but when it is used, it can turn the tide of the battle on its own.

The Zfylud is made up entirely of Zfylud Crystals, nanomachine-like particles that can reproduce, repair themselves, generate energy and even gain sentience in large quantities. Because of this, the mecha constantly generates its own power without any fuel requirements. Its Quantum Pulse Engine simply harnesses the waves of energy that the crystals constantly radiate. The Zfylud can also repair itself when damaged, due to the crystals' reproductive nature, but despite this property, the unit itself cannot be mass-produced. A limiter device on the mother crystal prevents the Zfylud from reproducing itself more than four times.

The Zfylud's most incredible feature is its ability to change its shape, depending on the nature of its opponents. In Alpha, the Zfylud took on a relatively small form, in order to challenge the protagonists. This shapeshifting process, however, takes a lot of time to complete and cannot be done at will. The Zfylud usually changes its configuration in the belly of the ship it commands, while the fleet observes its opponents with unmanned probes.

[edit] Specifications

Code Name: Nightmare Crystal

Height: 67.2 meters

Weight: 523.1 tons

Main Power Source: Quantum Pulse Engine

Armor Material: Zfylud Crystal

Defensive System: Gravity Territory Barrier

Weapon Systems:

  • Cross Blade
A handheld sword formed out of Zfylud Crystals.
  • Hexagram
A wide-area energy attack capable of damaging multiple enemies.
  • Ald Laser
An immense burst of radiation, possibly gamma rays, from gunbarrels mounted on the Zfylud's wrists.
  • Omega Wave
A time-space-bending energy shot out of the Zfylud's palms.
  • Zehn Gebote
"The Ten Commandments". In Alpha, the Zfylud maxes out its power output (as it does this, a ghostly image of the deity Zfylud appears) and fires an energy projectile at its victim, trapping it within a vortex of energy. The Zfylud then appears to grow to an immense size (this is probably just an illusion) and closes its fist around its victim. The victim is then crushed into nothingness by the swirling energy ball. In Super Robot Wars Alpha for the Sega Dreamcast, the giant Zfylud illusion crushes the victim with the point of its Cross Blade instead, stabbing it from above.

[edit] Zfylud Eved

A wide-area extermination aspect of the Zfylud. This form appeared in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, but was mentioned in Super Robot Wars Alpha.

[edit] Appearance

In this form, the Zfylud has grown to an immense size, possibly anywhere from 100 meters to a kilometer in diameter, and has lost its humanoid shape. The only remaining resemblance to its humanoid form is its face. The rest of it is a giant, amorphous crystalline mass.

[edit] Technical And Historical

The Zfylud Eved is the nucleus unit of the fleet's Hermóðr-class flagships. However, it has been reconfigured to include weapons designed for engaging multiple opponents. Since the Ze Balmary Empire was fighting the Buff Clan and the STMC in Alpha 3, all existing Zfylud were reconfigured into this monstrous form. Before Alpha 3, the Eved aspect was used in the war against the Zentradi, from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. The Zentradi fleet was so vast that the humanoid form was useless, having been designed more for mech-to-mech combat than anti-ship warfare. The Zfylud Eved single-handedly destroyed the Zentradi flagship, sealing the Zentradi defeat.

Strictly speaking, there were originally only seven Zfylud. However, they can be mass-produced if the limiters on their mother crystals are deactivated. Keisar Ephes produced large numbers of Zfylud Eved units, each of them piloted by his demonic Neshamah.

[edit] Specifications

Height: Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Main Power Source: Quantum Pulse Engine

Armor Material: Zfylud Crystal

Defensive System: Deflect Field

Weapon Systems:

  • Ald Laser
An intense burst of radiation, possibly gamma rays, fired from the Zfylud Eved's mouth.
  • Zehn Gebote
"The Ten Commandments". The Zfylud's crystal mass breaks apart into nine shards, each one orbiting around the face. Each shard fires a huge energy beam, while the face fires another beam from its mouth.
  • Meth Hazon
"Death Vision". A wide-area shower of crystals that deals immense amounts of damage while disabling weaponry.

[edit] Septuagint

This terrifying form appeared in Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation and Super Robot Wars Original Generations. After Levi Tolar's defeat, the protagonists find out that Meteor-3, the extraterrestrial asteroid that crashed landed on Aidoneus Island, was actually a large mass of Zfylud Crystals.

[edit] Appearance

The Septuagint does not have recognizable features -- it is nothing more than a gigantic, misshapen mass of purple, green and reddish-pink crystals. It has no face, arms or limbs. It is self-aware and can communicate, and often refers to itself as The Final Adjudicator.

[edit] Technical And Historical

The Septuagint is not considered a true Zfylud unit. The Zfylud units are the cores of the Empire's Hermóðr-class warships and serve as emergency superweapons, should the flagships be compromised. The Septuagint is an emergency weapon as well, but it is meant to eradicate a sample race, in the event that the race grew too strong for the invading forces to contain and assimilate. The Septuagint was originally sent to Earth in the form of Meteor-3, but when Levi's Judecca was destroyed, the Septuagint activated and began assimilating the fleets that were guarding Aidoneus Island. It uses its Zfylud crystals to absorb its victims, using their mass to increase its own.

What makes the Septuagint truly terrifying is its ability to manufacture Balmarian units from its Zfylud crystals, including Huleh-class warships. The downside to this reproductive cycle is that it takes five minutes to complete. In the final battle of Original Generation, the Septuagint began to grow Judecca-class mobile weapons, which would have easily wiped out the protagonists. Had it not been destroyed, the Septuagint could probably have single-handedly exterminated all life on Earth.

[edit] Specifications

Code Name: Meteor-3

Height: Unknown

Weight: Unknown

Main Power Source: Quantum Pulse Engine

Armor Material: Zfylud Crystal

Defensive System: Warp Field

Weapon Systems:

  • Energy Drain
The Septuagint fires beams that function as energy conduits, siphoning the energy from its victim's reactor.
  • Crystal Masmer
A deadly shower of crystal shards breaks off the Septuagint and tears the enemy to pieces.
  • Omega Wave
An intense pulse of radiation that destroys everything in its path.
    • The animation for this attack in Original Generations has the Septuagint crash itself to the Earth, breaking the ground around its target, plummeting it deep into the planet. The Septuagint follows it down and begins to charge energy from its core. Upon release, a powerful beam of energy blasts its target, sending it beyond the Earth's surface, all the way into outer space, where the target explodes from the attack.
